#WeeknightWriters Q5: I'm doing this on the short story, not #FirstDraftFall The MC is a woman born in Mexico & raised in the US, recently deported by her ICE-husband, now spending her days working at her tía's store & nights walking the river bank venting her rage & searching for peace.

Q5: Tell us about your main character. Who are they? What do they want? #WeeknightWriters

Notepad that says "#WeeknightWriters: Tell us about your main character. Who are they? What do they want?"

#WeeknightWriters Q4: Names! Either the name comes to me right away when I'm writing, or I end up with some kind of placeholder (see: Dr. [SCIENTIST]) that I'll agonize over later on. Until they have a name, it's hard for me to picture them, which means they don't have much of a face, either.

Q4: What aspects of character development do you find most frustrating? #WeeknightWriters

Notepad that says “#WeeknightWriters: What aspects of character development do you find most frustrating?"

#WeeknightWriters Q3: Hrm. I enjoy/get frustrated by characters doing things I don't expect & I like digging around to figure out why they did the thing. Basically it makes my little autistic brain happy to find a cause for each effect, even if the character didn't know it at the time.

Hello, #WeeknightWriters! I'm Stephanie, I've currently been sidetracked from my novel WIP by La Llorona, & I'm in the midst of travel plans for a trip with my mom to see family we haven't seen in many years. Cue the drama! #FirstDraftFall is mostly happening only in my head at this point.

Hello #WeeknightWriters! Come on in, introduce yourself and your WIP, and let us know how your #FirstDraftFall planning is going!

Can't say it enough: it's NOT MY JOB to prove to bigots I don't deserve their bigotry. Fuck those guys. Fuck those impotent idiots and their desperate, babybrain need to feel superior. They're fools and weaklings, and idiot tools for the worst people on Earth, PERPETUALLY. Fuck 'em.

Mis amigos hispanohablantes! Particularly those fluent in Spanish from northern Mexico - I need help! I'm 3rd-gen Mexican American & all my Spanish was learned in school, so I know it's not the most realistic. I'm also a writer & I could use help making this line sound natural:

#WeeknightWriters Q5: I've got a lot of academia to work with in this WIP, as the main characters are all part of the University (after WW3 & everything basically all higher ed in the West came together under one umbrella), so I've been learning a lot about the Ivory Tower & oooofta, no thank you.

#WeeknightWriters Q3: I'm going with "get words on the page every day" for progress, trying to be gentle with myself in the aftermath of burnout & in the midst of All The Things happening work/family/otherwise. I don't want to give myself a goal I'll feel guilty about not meeting. #FirstDraftFall

Q3: Will you be measuring your progress in word count, page count, or hours spent working on your #FirstDraftFall project? #WeeknightWriters

#WeeknightWriters Q2: I kinda touched on this before, but it's...well, it's set in an alternate history where a Series of Stupid Decisions led to worldwide air pollution & WW3 & an anthropologist decides to invoke a goddess to incite hope/gain power & fame, except the goddess wakes up and is PISSED.

Ha, I actually caught this week's intro post! I'm Stephanie, currently working on a project codenamed Voltaire, pithily described as "working through religious trauma with archeology and magic." I've been drafting it for a few weeks & want to figure out the second half this month. #WeeknightWriters

So. Somehow between looking for an ATM & getting a flu shot, I think I sold a copy of my book & got a pharmacist willing to give free flu shots to the unhoused communities served by the churches in my conference. On accident. This is what happens when I leave the house, I guess.

#WeeknightWriters Q2: Some feedback from a friend about my WIP has me questioning if I should continue writing it, as everything I'd been excited about is apparently not interesting or it doesn't make sense. I'm not sure if it's worth continuing.

#WeeknightWriters Q1: Ha. Ha ha. Ha ha ha. Family health stuff leading to planning travel (apparently I'm the family travel agent) & realizing my pick for book club this week was maybe not the best & spikes in pain & feedback on the WIP making me want to trunk it & & & yeah. This week's been hard.

Q1: How are you holding up this week? (Or not holding, as the case may be) #WeeknightWriters

Running late due to book club this week, but hi! I'm Stephanie Wood Franklin (she/her), the current WIP is codenamed Voltaire & is "working through religious trauma with archeology & magic" (though that's...in flux). This week's been hard. #WeeknightWriters
