There's no public current forecast for Lake George, so we built our own. The lake drains north, but the wind does the work: four days of north wind pushed the surface south, then the wind flipped and so did the lake. 25 Sep-2 Oct 2026. Data: NOAA HRRR, Jefferson Project, Auger (2023), CC BY 4.0

Florida has taken more direct hurricane hits than any other US state (NOAA). GTA VI's Leonida is modeled on it, storms included: wind reacts to buildings, and puddles outlast the rain. Rockstar says so itself. Probably the most realistic thing in the game. 🌪

Florida has 117 direct hurricane hits on record, more than any other US state (NOAA).

Weather forecasting for North American mid latitudes is worse today than just a couple of years ago. I see it, and, anecdotally, complaints about model guidance from colleagues in my profession are multiplying. Empirically, the American GFS model’s skill is back to 2019 levels 📉

“The Trump administration is also trying to eliminate NOAA's research office (baseless weather alarms) the primary scientific arm that studies events like El Niño, as part of that budget process. Since his second term, NOAA has lost more than 2,000 staff, largely due to retirements and firings.”

A powerful El Niño is already influencing extreme weather around the planet. During the last strong El Niño, federal agencies ramped up research in the hope of improving weather forecasts. This year, they won't be matching that effort. trib.al/dkJLZ2X

“The case is part of a wave of climate change litigation across the country and the world, with billions of dollars at stake. On Monday, the first day of the Supreme Court’s new term, the justices will hear the Boulder case that could decide the fate of others like it.” apnews.com/article/supr...

The Supreme Court will hear a major climate change case involving a devastating Colorado wildfire

Colorado's Boulder County is one of dozens of governments around the United States suing oil and gas companies to help pay for damage caused by disasters linked to climate change.

William O. Field photographed Alaska's Columbia Glacier’s front on Sept 11, 1931. Since 1980, the glacier retreated more than 20 km (12 miles), losing more than half its pre-1980 volume. See thousands of images from NOAA@NSIDC’s Glacier Photo Collection. https://bit.ly/3NcHZxk

I listen to a number of academic podcasts about climate and it's truly depressing how the US has abandoned the rest of the world. These climate organizations are trying to patch up the gaps left by the destruction of science and NOAA in the US. These are NOT political people. These are scientists.

Can't believe I missed this preprint earlier this week (head down, writing). The first time anyone has added a new gene to a cephalopod. They've created cuttlefish that glow red in fluorescent light. 🦑 🧪 Nice story @sarareardon.bsky.social! www.science.org/content/arti...

Scientists engineered a glowing cuttlefish. Why was it so hard?

🎉 OCEAN WIN: The Scottish Summer Isles just celebrated the 10th birthday of its scallop dredging ban in Wester Ross, now the world's BIGGEST marine protected area for maerl, a 9,000-year-old pink seaweed that creates incredibly diverse habitat for marine life 🪸 www.theguardian.com/environment/...

‘Beyond priceless’: how a halt to dredging saved the seas of Scotland’s Summer Isles

Fish and shellfish populations were falling rapidly as scallop dredgers devastated the seabed, but local activists and small-scale fishers battled hard to protect their coastline
