Back in Blighty after 8 wonderful days in Slovenia. Slightly cooler than on the way out because I left my beautiful turquoise jacket on a Flixbus 😭😭😭

One last sunset in Ljubljana before getting on the sleeper train home.
We took a bike tour of the city earlier, before we catch the sleeper train later. The roads in central Ljubljana were closed to traffic in 2004, making a wonderfully calm and cycleable city. The fountain in the second picture used to be a roundabout.
On our last day in Slovenia we headed out to the coast, to the tiny town of Piran. Slovenia’s coastline is so small that if you look one way, there’s Croatia, and the other way it’s Italy. There are no sand beaches but you can climb off the rocks into the sea, which is warm and clear 🌊
Lake Bled. You can see why it’s so Instagrammable. From every angle!

Slovenia is just lovely. Ljubljana was Tim’s favourite city and I can see why. It’s interesting, attractive and has a small friendly feel. I think of Tim often, especially here, and hope that many of you think of him often too.
Yep, it would have been quicker to fly (and a better night’s sleep). But I quit flying 20 yrs ago because of the emissions, and I truly believe that burning loads of fossil fuel isn’t worth it just so I can go on holiday. Especially if I can get there by train! See @flightfreeuk.bsky.social for more
And we have arrived in Ljubljana! Four trains and 24hrs from the UK to Slovenia. It all went pretty smoothly, with just one cancelled train but everything else working like clockwork. It’s never the best night’s sleep on a train but we are here and excited to explore 🇸🇮

Made it!! Step 4 in the epic train journey to Slovenia: the night train from Stuttgart to Ljubljana! This sofa will fold down to become my bed in an hour or so. Cosy!
Train cancelled. Not much we can do except wait for the next one. When life gives you lemons…
Step two: Brussels to Frankfurt, on this train. I’m a bit nervous about taking two ICE (German railways) trains back to back as they have a terrible reputation for being late/disrupted! But they are slick & comfy & clean & spacious which is nice. Already running 5 mins late though…
Step one of our holiday, Ljubljana by train! 🤩 In 24 hrs we will (hopefully) be arriving in the Slovenian capital. Three trains and a sleeper train between now and then… Fingers crossed it all runs smoothly! 🤞🇸🇮
Oops I said marathon when it's a half. Sorry for the mis-selling! 🫣 I'll just get to the end and turn around and do it again...

"One of the things I love about running is how simple it is. Just head out of the door and go where your legs take you. There’s very little kit needed, and importantly for a sustainability professional like me, there’s very little impact on the planet." My flight-free parkrun alphabet story 👇🏃♀️

Does anyone have a pair of solar glasses they are now not going to use? I’m going to head down to Gibraltar to see the next eclipse next year, and want to save a few of those pairs from landfill. Flight-free Gibraltar = trains to Paris, Barcelona, Madrid and Algeciras 🙌
I just voted for the new banknote animals. My absolute favourites are kingfisher and puffin. I was lucky enough to photograph puffins off the Northumberland coast on my round-Britain sail, and the magical flash of a turquoise kingfisher on the canal always brings a thrill.

It’s a dead giveaway, when there’s a bridge over nothing. The road rises briefly, up and over the hump, a blip in an otherwise contour-less scene. On either side, just the fields continuing their unin...

Jane Austen’s sister and mother were called Cassandra. The Great Exhibition was held in Hyde Park in 1851.
My Mensa member boyfriend did the Mensa mag quiz on me and was ASTOUNDED I knew the answers to these two questions (his strength is more numbers and logic, but still…): Anyone? What was the name of Jane Austen’s sister and mother? What happened in Hyde Park in 1851? (Is this niche knowledge?!)
It’s writing day on Slow Gin and the fire’s going strong. And a story’s just popped up on my feed about how bad wood burners are and how they will soon have health warnings attached. This makes me feel guilty. In every other aspect of my life I try to keep my impact low:
Now it's running on behalf of my charity, @flightfreeuk.bsky.social. Alastair Humphreys is still the host. There will still be 12 intrepid explorers. The format is still PechaKucha. The difference is it's all flight-free! In London or watch online. Pls come! www.tickettailor.com/events/fligh...

Horror: I just learned that a company is developing new supersonic aircraft that could be flying passengers before the end of the decade. Here's my comment on why that's not a good idea 👇 "The emissions from Concorde are still in the atmosphere today, still impacting our climate."
