It should not be a discussion about ‘schools need a NEETs strategy’ vs ‘UKneeds a different economic strategy’ it’s both. Both the likelihood of becoming NEET and national growth need targeting. Schools can do part of the former. Why the worry about schools doing their bit?

This is utterly bizarre. Shriver is saying expats are ok because they haven't let go of their national identity but the problem we have with immigration to the UK is people not letting go of their national identities?

Lionel Shriver quoted at Hay Festival 2026. She's an immigration restrictionist when it comes to the UK (having been one herself) and USA, but what about Portugal where she is a migrant? She says she followed the rules, but outstayed her visa. She also reheats the "expat"/"migrant" double standard.

Decline in use of social media worldwide, except in North America, Canada and USA there is an increased use. UK is one of the countries in the west where usage is lower than others. The extreme American colonisation of these spaces is clearly off putting…
