The ocean continues to warm up. While 0.1°C may not sound like much, underwater it has the effect of a creeping wildfire, putting stress on the ecosystems. 🔥 🎤 Prof. Dr Katja Matthes talks about the impact of marine heatwaves to Deutschlandfunk. 🔗 www.deutschlandfunk.de/erwaermung-d...

🌊 The ocean has a lot to say, and this Scripps Oceanography scientist (and alumna) is all ears! As a marine bioacoustician in the Scripps Machine Listening Laboratory, Kait Frasier uses underwater microphones to study whales, noise & ecosystem change. ⤵️ https://bit.ly/4vP7Lev

Nearly 50 years of observations at Rothera Research Station tell a clear story: 📈 June 2025 was the warmest since records began 🌡️ June 2026 could rank among the warmest too 💧 This is the third midwinter in four years with no sea ice at Rothera Here's our write up: www.bas.ac.uk/news/think-i...

Think it’s hot here? The Antarctic Peninsula is unusually warm too - British Antarctic Survey

As extreme summer heat causes disruption across the UK and Europe this week, Midwinter at Antarctica’s Rothera Research Station is becoming increasingly unrecognisable.

The 2011 marine heatwave off Western Australia was one of the first extreme ocean warming events to be studied in detail. It had devastating impacts and shaped the scientific concept of a marine heatwave - a term used to describe prolonged periods of unusually warm ocean temperatures.
