How to engage (and have impact) at the science-policy interface? In a new Commentary (doi.org/10.17645/oas...) we explore this specifically for early-career researchers aiming to engage with marine governance. Check out the paper for practical, entry‐level guidance as a starting point.

Another successful round of coral reef surveys in the northern Red Sea. 🌊 I had a blast further contributing to Saudi Arabia’s coral reef monitoring program and building our knowledge of the country’s reefs 🪸
📣 Ocean-reef interaction studies: Relevant across geographies (a), but understudied (b), biased towards coral studies (c), small but growing base of coral reef upwelling studies (d)
📣Happy to share that our comment on reef-ocean interactions is out in @natecoevo.nature.com today. 🌊🪸 Thanks @richardson-le.bsky.social for leading this work!

Great news to start the year! California has banned polystyrene takeout food containers. The Aquarium and a statewide coalition worked to enact #SB54, holding producers responsible for #PlasticPollution from products they create. This is a sign of success! mbayaq.co/3BVs97l
The world's fifth-largest economy is about to ban most polystyrene foam
Rules taking effect in California ban cups, clamshells and other food ware made from expanded polystyrene foam unless companies meet a high recycling target.

🚨New paper alert! Do you deploy loggers to monitor temperature in coral reefs, or any shallow aquatic environments? Do you shade them from direct sunlight? You should! 🌊🦑 journals.plos.org/climate/arti...
Widespread inconsistency in logger deployment methods in coral reef studies may bias perceptions of thermal regimes
Ocean warming is the greatest threat to coral reefs, prompting a need to accurately monitor in situ temperatures. Advancements in sensing technologies have led to a proliferation of temperature logger...

Ok, I’m loving the starter packs! This one is for women (inclusively defined) in Ocean Science. You need more ocean 🌊 in your feed! Follow these folks. If you would like to be added please just let me know 👋 … if I forgot you, please don’t be offended, it was an accident! go.bsky.app/7MdiLgo
Back from surveying #fish and #coralreefs in the beautiful Gulf of Aqaba and NEOM in the Red Sea. Some reefs were hit hard over the summer but it’s cooling down and we are seeing some signs of recovery 🪸
I couldn’t find a starter pack for POCs working in STEM, so I started one myself - my network here is still small and I didn’t want to assume how people identify, so please reply or DM me if you want to be added! go.bsky.app/BJkKQVR
Wow - we've now had to form a Volume 2 of Marine Biologist starter packs: Volume 1: go.bsky.app/RS5zQHv Volume 2: go.bsky.app/8DoyTMs 🦑
