Yesterday we headed north to begin this summer's fieldwork in the southernmost of our four survey areas. Over the coming weeks we'll monitor foxes, collect data, and share the journey from the Scandinavian mountains.

Yesterday, Judith Jonkers presented her MSc thesis, Gut microbiome diversity and composition across captive and wild Arctic fox populations. A great piece of work in a relatively new research area for us in the Swedish Arctic Fox Project. We hope to see the results published in the near future.
Fox Friday and last call! This Sunday, April 13, is the final day to apply for this summer’s arctic fox fieldwork. Spend weeks in the mountains contributing to conservation research. Learn more & apply: link in bio #FoxFriday #ArcticFox
Fox Friday surprise: An arctic fox turned up near Trondheim harbour, far the tundra habitat. Ear tags showed she was marked by us and WWF as a cub last summer in Helags, Sweden. Usually movements by foxes help connect fragmented populations and maintain genetic exchange across Scandinavia.
After last year’s relatively good numbers, arctic fox reproduction in Sweden decreased in 2025. Some areas had a fairly good year, others not. Low prey availability likely influenced this pattern. For more information read the full Fennoscandian report (hdl.handle.net/11250/5333907).
New study on arctic fox genomics shows strong effects of fur farming: reduced diversity, inbreeding, and coastal origins linked to Icelandic foxes. A reminder that domestication leaves deep genetic footprints. 🔗 doi.org/10.1111/mec.70166
That's So Last Season: Unraveling the Genomic Consequences of Fur Farming in Arctic Foxes (Vulpes lagopus)
Humans have relied on animal fur for centuries, yet fur farming only began recently during the mid-19th Century. Little is known about this incipient domestication or the genomic processes involved. ...

The 2025 arctic fox field season is underway! Our first teams are heading into the mountains to monitor dens and support conservation efforts. Here's to a safe and successful summer in the field! #arcticfoxproject #fjällräv #fieldseason2025 #conservation #wildlifework #fjällrävsprojektet #arcticfox
Fox Friday and the final three days to apply for this summer's volunteer fieldwork! If you’re interested, head over to the fieldwork site (www.su.se/english/rese...) to learn more and submit your application. It’s one of the most rewarding, yet also most demanding, ways to support the arctic fox!
