A cool brainy study, the results of which don’t surprise me that much. From my (very gross) observations of brains through time the fore + mid unit appear to operate quite differently from the hindbrain… 🐟 🧠 🐸

A study in Nature Neuroscience shows that the brain arises from two distinct progenitors, not one. One forms the forebrain and midbrain, whereas the other generates the hindbrain. go.nature.com/3Vb6Jwk #Neuroskyence 🧪

This is figure 4, which shows generation of dorsal forebrain, ventral forebrain, dorsal hindbrain and ventral hindbrain progenitors from hPS cells in vitro.

New paper out today! Led by Daniel Schwarz, we retrodeformed the skull and reconstructed the cranio-mandibular musculature of the giant stem-amphibian Mastodonsaurus giganteus. Our results show that Mastodonsaurus had a powerful bite and a crocodile- like bite-and-hold feeding style.

For those in Adelaide who work with digital 3D data, I'm organising an informal workshop for us to share insights on our methods, challenges and ideas at the "Flinders University 3D Data Software, Analysis and Visualisation Workshop" on Sep 24th Register here: events.humanitix.com/flinders-uni...

🧪 The latest from the Origin of Tetrapods project! For decades our Latvian colleagues have been excavating at Pavari, a Devonian locality yielding the tetrapod Ventastega. Here's a new lungfish from the same fauna, described by @draliceclement.bsky.social and the rest of us.
