Refill belts are usually issued in little vacuum-packets that you can rip the top off and slide right into the magazine, they contain 42 rounds. Since this arrangement doesn't tessellate, your average GI was usually trained to pack a mere 40 rounds from a loose belt, discarding the last 2.

I have also been wanting to make the early-gen 'digital' optics used during the war chunkier, a lot chunkier. These are fairly sophisticated devices incorporating visual, IR, and radar into systems that enable shot prediction, target tracking, IFF, and even aim-assist, when paired with a frame.
