literary fiction, broadly, is fiction that prioritises character exploration over a distinct plot. it's "genre-less" in that it doesn't neatly follow established conventions of other genre fiction. yes, litfic is a genre, and not, and it's a secret third thing that publishers use to make life easy.

I’m sorry but literary fiction still doesn’t make sense to me as a publishing category beyond ‘it’s not ~ genre* ~ because ~ genre ~ is bad and populist.’ Hate to break it to you but literary fiction is also a genre. *SFF, romance, and mystery, you know, silly girlie stuff and beach reads.

and the one character — whom the terf queen has retroactively decided is black after decades of being called racial slurs — who points out this atrocity, is mocked and humiliated for an entire book, by every other character, including the mixed race person known for his kindness.
