My piece in today's Wall Street Journal argues that the genocide libel against Israel reflects antizionist ideology. Every academic promoting the accusation relies on the assumption that Israelis are foreign colonizers. The same inversion was used to justify the Rwandan Genocide.

Antizionism is a global, transnational structure. It is not reducible to Hamas. It involves multiple genocidal antizionist militias, Houthis, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, etc. who colonize whole regions and submit their populations to their endless war machine.

Antijudaic polemics against the “chosen people,” Lutheran notions of Jewish “racial arrogance,” and Pauline oppositions between “spirit” and “flesh” were reframed in secular political language as the claim that “Zionism is racism.”

The Soviet and Arab nationalist construction of antizionism evolved along two intersecting lines, one deriving from Christian antijudaism—often via the input of Levantine Arab-Christian intellectuals e.g. Fayez Sayegh, Constantine Zureiq, Michel Afleq and others, the other from Soviet antizionism.
