Next one in my A. E. van Vogt reading marathon is 'The Silkie' published in 1969. I really liked this one with the whole concept of the Silkie able to exist in 3 forms; water, human & space being very cool. This edition also has one of my favourite sci-fi book art covers by Bruce Pennington.

Now playing ‘Chopin Etudes’ performed by Maurizio Pollini. Do yourself a favour and listen to the opening piece Etude No.1 in C Major often called the Waterfall. Apart from the incredible technique on display to play this there’s something incredibly beautiful about the harmonies within this piece.

Continuing my A. E. van Vogt odyssey with Quest For the Future, published in 1970, it is a fix-up novel from three previously published short stores (1943 - 1946). This really is mind-boggling & I'm still trying to figure it out - something about probability universes and time travel. Nice cover too

As I've seen the film, and thoroughly enjoyed it, I thought I would reread this translation of the Odyssey by E. V. Rieu. This is done in prose form so it reads like a novel and it really is very good. However you can't just lift this direct to screen so I think the film made the right choices.

More experimenting with the OXI One sequencer ahead of my gig at the Awakenings in September. This is using Domino mode which has independent trigger & note layers (for the 2 higher register sequence lines) as well as the Performance mode for various transpositions.

Since seeing the film (which is incredible)I have been listening to the fantastic score by Ludwig Göransson. There's some really interesting things going on with massed voices with a seemingly never ending upward pitch glissando - sounds like a shepherd tones technique. Anyone else spot this?

Latest read has been 'Visions and Nightmares' about the painter Hieronymous Bosch. Most famous for his nightmarish visions of heaven & hell I was inspired to read this after our recent visit to Belgium and the Groeningemuseum in Bruges which housed his 'The Last Judgement' created around 1486.

Just seen The Odyssey on IMAX so I'll cut straight to the chase - it's an incredible cinematic experience. A modern interpretation of a 3000 year old mythical poem that is enjoyable on so many levels yet carries the weight of an important message of how mankind never remembers the true cost of war.

Patching in the OXI One MK2 into my live Eurorack modular set-up for my upcoming gig in September at the Awakenings. Two layers of arps here + bass line with drums/percussion from the left hand rack. I'm liking the more interactive hands on approach here rather than static sequencing.

Latest read in my A. E. van Vogt marathon has been the 1971 novel, ,The Battle Of Forever'. Even with his canon of weird works this one is really far out. Humans with miniature physiologies living behind a barrier whilst genetically altered animals live in the real world. And aliens have taken over.

So lovely to see many folk connecting with 'Symbiont', my collaborative album with Andy Pickford released 31 years ago. Reissued in a remastered edition with a bonus track of our set at the Alfa-Centauri festival in Huizen, the Netherlands, in 1996.

This should be interesting. I've had my eye on an OXI Instruments OXI One MKII sequencer for quite a while & decided to take the plunge now so I can use it at my upcoming Awakenings gig in September. I'm looking at getting a whole lot more interactive with sequencing in a live setting with this.

Whenever I go to another country I always like to pick up an English translation of a native author. So in Bruges I got a copy of 'Cheese', published in 1933, by Willem Elsschot which is apparently the most translated Flemish novel ever. Whimsical & humorous it's a brisk, light read.
