Climate impacts will become a structural macro-fiscal problem. With low private insurance, EU governments are sleepwalking into becoming disaster insurers of last resort. Our @bruegel.org Policy Brief on mitigating rising fiscal costs of climate disasters. 🔗 www.bruegel.org/policy-brief... 🧵1/10

Planning for the rising fiscal costs of climate disasters

Low insurance coverage is turning EU governments into disaster insurers of last resort, strengthening the case for prevention and adaptation finance

Fun graph by the EU Commission on the length of summer holidays in the EU. To be frank, as a parent, even the six weeks in Germany feel long. How are parents supposed to bridge 14 weeks of summer holiday?

Graph of the length of summer holidays, ranging from 14 weeks (Italy) to 6 weeks (Denmark, Netherlands, Germany).

Striking visualisation of climate extremes by @copernicusmarine.bsky.social. These are data from 2025. I wonder if new colour codes will be needed for 2026? 🌊🔥

As the pattern of climate extremes continues, monitor events using #CopernicusMarine data via WEkEO, whose visualisation tools allow you to explore and download data from Copernicus Marine and more. https://bit.ly/4wXT9tQ 📸 Seawater temperatures around Europe, 25/7/25

Water temperatures range from colder shades in the north to warmer in the south, with the Mediterranean Sea displaying higher temperatures. The map includes data tools and a legend on the left, with navigation and support options at the top.

Fish. 🐟 France, Portugal and Germany managed to bloc EU sanctions on Russian fresh fish imports. Apparently Surimi is an indispensable French classic. Germans can only eat fish fingers made from Russian fish. And Portugal's national dish, dried cod, is now Made in Russia.

Building regulation: That's a tricky piece of land. You have to keep a safe distance on both sides. Owner: No problemo.

Thin sliced house on the Belgian coast.

we are entering into the #Invasivecene, exacerbated by #climatechange. Here, in the Bay of Biscay we have many invasives growing: Rugulopteryx okamurae, Sargassum muticum, some planarians, bivalves, etc. #MarineEcoology #Research

🦁🐟 #Lionfish everywhere! During our Ionian Sea surveys, #CaRe-GR recorded widespread Pterois miles, along with Diadema setosum and invasive rabbitfish (Siganus luridus & S. rivulatus). Controlling these invaders is key to protecting Mediterranean reefs. #MarineEcology #bioinvasions #InvasiveSpecies
