“I think you should try that hairstyle again,” I joked, unable to resist laughing at the bowl cut.

“I’d rather shave my head than put myself through that embarrassment.”

He turned the page, escaping the memories of his worst hairstyles and photogenic poses. We carried on laughing and commenting on the photos. We saw the evolution of three children: a girl with wavy, caramel-coloured hair, a figure who was overexposed in practically every picture, and a dark-haired boy with a long fringe complemented by glasses. We moved through their pre-teens, where the girl began to show her more feminine features, the blonde boy acquired a more confident and comfortable posture with a metallic smile, and the other boy's fringe grew in proportion to his glasses' prescription.

“I like how Diogo is inversely proportional to us,” Jonathan commented amidst breathless laughs. “We're at least halfway presentable here, but look at him.”

I exhaled loudly. The paradox of hearing something that was simultaneously so completely new, yet so incredibly familiar, was making my brain hurt.

"It was never a topic he liked to discuss. But I’m glad he felt that comfortable with you." As I finished the sentence, a sour taste of jealousy lingered in my mouth.

"I forced him into it," Ryan said proudly. "But seriously, don't pull that face like you've just found out your brother has a terminal illness. He's sound. For a definition of sound. Everything's cool between us. I'll take it."

"Good for you," I muttered, letting the sound of hooves fade back into background music. "But if he really is that closed off to relationships of any kind, then what was his deal rushing things with you and now seeming a bit obsessed?"

"Obsessed?" Ryan repeated, back by my side again. His cheeks were redder than usual. "I'm flattered."

"Pete?" I heard a female voice in the distance, muffled as if it were coming from the bottom of the sea. "Pete?"

I opened my eyes slowly. They stung so much I felt a tingling in my nose.

"Hey. What are you doing here?" It was my mum's voice.

Here? I wasn't fully lying down, my legs were hanging off the side of the bed. I sat up, disorientated. It took me a moment to recognise the red bedspread on the bed I was on. I must have fallen asleep without realising.

"What time is it?" I rubbed my eyes.

"Nearly seven in the evening, I've just arrived home."

The text from the newspaper was still echoing in my mind. I didn't have to try hard to remember what I was doing before I threw myself onto the mattress, trying not to have an anxiety attack.

I went to the stables. It is a bad sign when I let myself be impressed by the sight of the wide, gleaming corridor, lined with polished wooden stalls. Everything is so immaculate and sweet-smelling.
I approached Pan's stall. It was empty. My heart skipped a beat.
I headed to the paddock as quickly as the dizziness would allow me. I got drenched again for nothing. Pan wasn't out there either. I hadn't turned up and he hadn't waited for me. Panic crept up my chest.
I slowly followed the muddy lane between the endless lawns and the heavy drops falling from the leaves of the trees. The door to the main arena was open. I could hear a lesson taking place. I went in through the back and climbed the stairs to the mezzanine. It was silent. I walked around the sofa and leaned against the glass. In the arena, there were trotting poles and low jumps. Five horses in total. But none with four white socks.

"You’re going to have to be my guides. I’m not sure I know the city anymore."

"You wanna go to the biggest shopping centre, yeah?" asked Ryan, walking beside us again. I nodded. "Bus just up the road to the city centre, then the metrolink. You’ve already got your pass, so we're sorted. LET'S GO TO THE MALL, EVERYBODY!" he shouted in a sing-song voice, throwing in an energetic dance. "Damn, you lot haven't watched How I Met Your Mother, so you don't get the references."

He took two seconds to judge us before going back to humming about going to the mall, dancing around with little skips and erratic movements.

Melanie leaned in and covered her mouth with her scarf before whispering to me:

"Do you think he’s like this because he drinks four coffees a day, or does he have to drink four coffees a day to manage being like this?"

"Neither option sounds particularly healthy, but we like Ryan just the way he is."

I only needed 0.001% of his upbeat energy to change my life.

My absolute favourite time of year is here. Nothing compares to the buzz of Summer Eventing. The joy of the season is multiplied a thousandfold, amplified by the thrill of spending three days surrounded by friends, hooves, and everyone cheering their heads off.

It’s my second year on the team. This time, I'm riding with Florence, Jonathan, and Daniel. Our Jona’s the one who’s been around the block the most with these comps, though he's top tier at the showjumping, really. He’s the one who drives the team forward, starting the game plan, and shouting advice like a proper coach. Florence is the oldest of the four of us, and she's just as bang-on at showjumping as Jona. Daniel is also a regular. He absolutely sends it round the cross-country course, making it look all easy.

And then there’s Ryan, me. I wonder how I managed to repeat the feat of qualifying for the team.

"Mel told me this morning about your adventures."

My heart did a flip and I ended up choking.

"You alright?" Ryan got up, alarmed, and brought me the water bottle. "Don't go dying on me, mate."

I coughed until I was dizzy. Ryan thumped my back as if that would help, but every time I raised my hand to tell him to stop, the coughing fit started up again. I downed the water in gulps bigger than my throat could handle. By that point, he was laughing more than actually helping.

When there was nothing left but an irritating tickle in my throat, I managed to breathe in enough air to speak.

"What did she tell you?"

I swallowed hard, and not just to soothe the remaining itch.

"Judging by that reaction, looks like she didn't tell me everything," Ryan raised an eyebrow, a cheeky grin spreading across his face. "Mind you, I don't want no details anyway."

I looked at the time. 72.61 seconds. An excellent time, but 0.2 seconds too slow to dethrone Amanda.
Jonathan looked back at the screen. Given the result, the tiredness in his expression was joined by a dejection that weighed heavily on his eyes and the corners of his mouth. He gave Kris's neck two sharp pats, but even that gesture seemed empty.
"I'm holding myself back from running after him," Vanessa said, sounding like a worried mother. "But it's better to let him blow off some steam first."
I nodded. As much as I wanted to go over and tell him that what he did was incredible, I didn't think his bad sportsmanship would treat me well. Following Vanessa’s lead, I stayed still and tracked him with my eyes as he gave a nod of acknowledgement and headed back towards the warm-up arena. I saw my grandmother quicken her pace to catch up with him by the gate, wearing a victorious smile that contrasted sharply with the melancholy radiating from Jonathan.

We sat at the dining table. Ryan took Daniel’s place next to me, which brought a smile to my mum’s face when she came over to put the bowl in the middle. It felt good to be the three of us again.

"Help yourselves." She pulled out the chair opposite me and sat down, still wearing her apron. She took it off once she was seated.

Ryan didn't stand on ceremony.

"If this tastes even half as good as it looks, I’m moving in," he said, as the pyramid of pasta grew on his plate.

"You’ve got a spare bed," my mum said. "You can go and visit your parents whenever Daniel needs it."

"Nah, we can both fit." He choked a bit at the end. His cheeks flushed instantly.

Life is a grand and intricate work of art. We can spend a hundred years working on it, but it will never be considered finished. There is always one more detail, one more colour, one more line to add or perfect. It is difficult, it is challenging. Fighting against entropy is what kills us. In the end, we are all doomed to the same outcome. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. And just like a work of art, it is easier to destroy it than to improve it. Of course, the conscience one is left with after one act or the other is not the same, unless the individual is accompanied by the very same demons that accompanied me. Then, they will see destruction as an improvement of the work, and with absolute pride, they will show the corrupted canvas to the world.
You just have to catch the wave of entropy. One misstep can be fatal.

"Your little brother went missing last night," Ryan said, nudging me with his shoulder.
My stomach lurched. The innocence with which he said it only made things worse. Daniel frowned in silence, waiting for me to elaborate.
"I just went out for some fresh air," I snapped back. "If I'd gone missing, I wouldn't be standing here now."
I was met with two questioning stares.
"You don't seem to be all here right now." Daniel’s reply was quick and blunt. "But suit yourself. Just don't complain about it later."
"I won't complain."
I felt something pulling us apart, as though the ground were opening up between us. I sank into that abyss, savouring the justice of the punishment I was finally receiving for all the mistakes I'd made over the past few days. The part of me that feels abandoned tangled itself up with the part that is grateful for Daniel's coldness. Together, they tumbled down the ravine. I couldn't tell which one came out on top.

I stood up and climbed back onto the stool to shut the door. It was then that a varnished wooden box caught my eye. My hands were drawn to it like magnets. The moment I touched it, I knew the hunt was over.

I stepped down from the stool carefully so the box wouldn't move too much. I sat on the floor with it in front of me. I took one, two, three deep breaths. There was no easing the tension in my chest.

With a click, I undid the metal clasp and slowly lifted the lid.

The second I caught a glimpse of an edge of royal blue, white, and red, my heart dropped into my lap. I shut the box close. I slumped back against the wall. I couldn't seem to catch my breath. I squeezed my eyes shut, but it was as if I'd never closed the box at all. The colours of the Union Jack were burned into my eyelids.

I knew I shouldn't have meddled with it.

I pulled my knees to my chest. The box remained on the floor in front of me. It kept calling to me. I swallowed hard.

There was more cross-chatter at lunch than usual. Ten minutes in, I was the only one who had already finished eating.

"I’m praying I don't draw the short straw." The bloke next to me — Bell, according to the name tag on his jacket — clasped his hands together and looked up to the heavens, despite the damp-ridden ceiling blocking his view. "It’s my girlfriend’s birthday next weekend."

I bit my tongue to stop myself from barking that I had much better reasons not to have my leave cancelled.

"Word is we're getting company from the Navy," said the one who's always red in the face.

"Oh, yeah?" Another guy looked up from the plate of meat in front of him. His face annoys me, it reminds me of Jonathan. "We'll have to show those faggots what we're made of, then."

"Reckon it'll be some of that joint-op bullshit?" someone said with their mouth full.

"Next thing, the Royal Chair Force will be joining the party."

Not even that made me laugh. Someone elbowed me.

I stayed in the lounge in front of the roaring fire to dry off. There was no one there; I was able to lose myself in the flickering of the flame.

I looked for something with an older feel to it. A grey spine, cracked down the middle with worn corners, caught my eye. I pulled it out carefully.
The title took up almost half the cover, with a blurry photograph of a group of soldiers underneath. All Quiet on the Western Front. I knew that one. I had a gut feeling there would be something written at the end. I just wasn’t expecting this:
“War is shit. 5/5”
Searching for an answer to the question “did he read this book before or after he enlisted?”, I turned back to the beginning of the book. It was a 1994 edition. I believe that if he’d read it before, he would have backed out. But then, I don't understand how, after being there, he could still read war stories in his spare time.
I smiled to myself. I felt sad. Then I chuckled again.
There were books with no reviews at the end. Books filled with annotations. I could picture my mum asking him to stop writing in the books and him finding alternatives—torn-out sheets of paper tucked into the cover with his thoughts on them, post-it notes stuck to the final page. All of them always with a five-star rating.

“You came alone again.” Her voice distracted me.
“Daniel is property of the Crown now. I can't count on his company anymore.”
“When can I tattoo a ‘Mum’ heart on him?”
I choked back a laugh to avoid moving.
“Never, I think. I do try to convince him. Tattoed knuckles would suit his attitude.”
“‘FUCK’ on the right, ‘THIS’ on the left.” She gave a nod of approval.
“I’d pay for that.”
“What about you?” she asked, between wipes of a paper towel. “What would yours say?”
I stared at the white lights on the ceiling, mentally running through a list of four- or eight-letter words, looking for something that'd fit me.
“I don't know.” I held my hands up in front of me. "Left and right indicators would come in handy.”
“I’ll do an L and an R for free before you leave.”
“I’ll pass,” I said, after considering it for a legitimate second.
“You were close to saying yes, admit it.” The corners of her mouth twitched upwards without breaking her focused expression.
“No, it’d be embarrassing to explain.”
“Sure.”
The buzz of the machine took over the room again.
The hand holding my skin moved a couple inches to the side and the needle resumed its work. I understood what Ashley meant about the skin being more sensitive there.

Patrícia gently moved her mobile phone in a horizontal line around her. It stopped with the camera pointed at me. Her grey eyes peacefully swept over my face before giving me a smile, which I returned without thinking.
"That smile suits you, Peter. Keep it."
At the compliment, I looked away and instinctively hid my face. Satisfied, Patrícia lowered her phone and looked at the screen. She thanked me, although I didn't understand what I had done to deserve the thanks.
"Give me your number, so I can send you the video."
"Video?" I asked, alarmed.
"The photos weren't working, so I decided to record. And thank goodness, otherwise I wouldn't have captured that adorable smile live."
"What are you going to do with this video?" My panic was louder than Patricia's contentment.
"I'm going to save it in a folder on my computer, so that in a few months or years I can go back there and revisit all those moments."
"Photo diary?"
"Exactly!" She extended her hand toward me. "You know, I used to call this a “project”, but now that you’ve used the word diary, I’ll adopt it. Four years, one photo or video a day. I wish I had started sooner."
The sharing slowed my pulse. We have more in common than I could ever imagine.

“Right, look at it this way: if you took your girlfriend on holiday with you, wouldn’t it be great?”
“First of all, there’s no ‘if’ about it, because I’ve already taken Patrícia on holiday more times than I can count. Secondly, out of all those times we went, there wasn't a single one where I took her with the sole intention of getting her to mate up with every single girl I’ve ever slept with. Diogo abruptly cut himself off, just as I was getting excited to hear him talk about a relationship that actually made sense.

I hid my cold hands in my pockets. I’m no fan of gloves, not even for riding. But after a few unwanted cuts and burns, you have to give in. Not today, though. I want to feel everything with bare hands.
I started as I felt the familiar angles of the notch in the handle and the cold metal of the switchblade in my left pocket. I flicked it open. It's like playing with fire, but I’ve reached the point where I've tamed the flames. I ran my thumb along the edge, careful not to cut the skin. It was one of the first times I didn’t feel a burning—or cutting—desire. No thirst for pain, nor the slightest belief that it would solve anything.
Why him? Why? Why? I repeated the questions, detached from the coldness of the metal.
A buzzing pierced my ears, taking over and drowning out every other sound. I felt a sharp twinge of pain under my right arm, forcing me to double over. That movement was cut short by a tearing pain, like the slash of a sharp razor. The sensation of the stab was such that I instinctively clapped my hand to my neck, where the burning was coming from. The buzzing intensified, leaving me dizzy. I let out a gasping roar between breathy exhalations.

"Having you here today wasn't in the plans at all." Florence's eyes were red when she pulled away from me. She cupped my cheeks in her hands, as if making sure I was still the same person. "Took you long enough. Did you forget the way back? Idiot."
"I could ask you the same." I stroked her bare arms, the warmth radiating from her was real.
"I feel like I'm watching something I shouldn't be," said Ryan, who had stayed behind with Melanie and Jonathan. "I don't know. I'm not used to seeing you being so lovey-dovey."
"Put like that, it sounds like something else," I grumbled, feeling my cheeks burning.
I took a step back, making space for us to form a semi-circle in front of the house door, where Florence was still composing herself.
"Sorry, with all this I didn't even say hello," she said, before greeting Melanie and Ryan with a hug. "You lot? Here? Someone pinch me."
"I'm a professional at doing the impossible," Jonathan said with an overly wide, white grin, finishing with a smug wink.
With her arms crossed, Florence marched over to Jonathan. She had that expression that commanded respect.
"Oh, you... arghh!" She gave his ear a sharp tug. Jonathan’s gripes didn't move Florence one bit. "Gran called and told me everything. No need to act as if you've actually done something brilliant. Hypocrite." She let go of him, but still gave his cheek a hard pinch before leaving him alone. "Sore loser. You're supposed to get over that in primary school."

About last night…
I want to make it clear that nothing happened to me. I just laid in bed listening to music.
I listened to the song Patrícia sent me along with the video she recorded at the beach. "If I Get High", by a band called Nothing But Thieves. I’ve been listening to it on repeat. I already know the lyrics by heart, which isn't like me at all.
I never really replied to that message. What would I even say? That I cried for an hour when I watched the music video? Ask her how on earth she knew which songs would leave me completely shattered?
It’s hard to ignore the unease that all of this is causing me.
I’d have preferred it if she’d sent me a love song, even though I know that wouldn’t be any easier for me. I’m in no fit state to be in a relationship. Leave alone a long-distance one.
Looking at those messages is like hearing her say, "I know exactly what's going on inside your head." It only makes me want her more than I should.
It's so frustrating. Why couldn't I have met her sooner.
At the very least, I should thank her. I thought about her so much that I forgot whatever it was that was making me anxious.

The sky was grey, as usual. We were formed up in the square. Straight ranks, boots aligned on the concrete still wet from the night. The smell of rain never lasted long before being replaced by the smell of fuel, oil, and, on a less boring day, gun smoke.
You could tell it was Friday. There was a buzz and a certain relaxed atmosphere. Everyone was already thinking about the weekend. Me included.
I submitted my request on Monday. By Wednesday, my leave was approved. Someone celebrated because Howe had finally remembered he had a home to go back to.
Yesterday, I bought my train ticket. Today, when my shift finishes, I’ll pack my stuff and get my ass outta here. I’ll arrive late, but I hope not too late.
I haven’t heard from my brother in a week. And this time, it’s not my fault. I’ve been ringing him every day. And every day, it goes straight to voicemail. He leaves my messages on read. Mum assures me that everything is fine, that he just needs some alone time. He hasn't left the house since the day he nearly gave me a heart attack and I considered stealing a jeep to go looking for him.
There’s only one way to make sure things don't go off the rails: go back, however much it might prove that I was wrong to give him space to bloom.

"Where…? Did she…?" I shot up suddenly and looked around the cramped space. Panic surged up my throat like a flash of lightning. "Mel… was someone else here? With us?"
Her hands guided me back down to her with a calmness I didn't possess. She let my head rest on her shoulder. Her fingers traced wide, slow circles on my back. I was so exhausted, it actually worked.
"Looks like she didn't fancy third wheeling," Mel said.
I looked at her, searching for a more concrete clue. Nothing. Just a serene smile.
I tried to smile back, but a laugh of sheer disbelief escaped me instead. Did that really happen? Between the three of us? Absurd. Perhaps my mind will make up a better version tomorrow.
I’ve been told plenty of times that my dad is watching over us from wherever he is. I really hope he closed his eyes for this one.
"I need to sleep on this," I concluded, more to myself than to her.
The stroking stopped.
"Let’s head back to the hotel. I can’t go back inside after this." She laughed. "But it was… incredible."
"When I first saw you coming through that door, that wasn't quite the adjective I was expecting you to use."

Someone got deployed with the worst timing English on alt #WIPSnip #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

Cleaning, checking, prepping. None of this required using my head. And that was precisely the problem. The movements were just as automatic as the thoughts. But nobody cared what I thought. We had all already accepted that we hadn’t been asked to check our kits just for the sake of it.
A month or two ago, having a deployment on the horizon would have been a blessing. No one would have been able to nag me about not going home for weeks.
But now? My mind won't stop trying to come up with reasons to believe I still have a chance.
I looked at the time. It’s nearly four in the afternoon and I still haven't cancelled my train ticket.
"Howe."
I looked towards the voice.
"What now?"
"The sergeant wants to speak to you," he said, as if it wasn't important.
I swore under my breath.
There you go. It was blindingly obvious what was going to happen. Having to head over to the admin building was just a bureaucratic formality for what was already more than confirmed in my head.

A heavy silence fell over the car. There was only the sound of the tyres rolling on the tarmac and the engine roaring with disproportionate effort. I leant my head against the window, feeling the cold glass contrast with the stuffy heat inside.
"You should save up to buy a proper motor," I suggested, lightening the mood again.
Dan shrugged, an awkward gesture when you have one hand on the steering wheel and the other on the gearstick.
"If it's just gonna sit in the garage, might as well keep the cash in the bank." He let out a laugh. "Besides, where's the thrill in driving a car that actually works?"
"Masochism's a bitch."
"Yeah..."
