This is a shockingly large effect size.

Last year black infants had the highest rate of infant mortality at 7 per 1,000 births, followed by Pakistani infants at 5.2 per 1,000, more than twice the rate of white children at 3 per 1,000.

"We ought to acknowledge that this is a problem, and that it's got patient safety implications for mothers and babies," he said. I've known Bill Kirkup for a decade. He chooses his words carefully and does not seek headlines or drama but follows the evidence. This is hugely concerning.

Amos reports into trusts full of "we were told" - as was feared this work doesn't get under the skin of a complex issue. National findings hardly revelatory. Families angry & let down. Even Bill Kirkup resigned. It will fail to stop calls for a public inquiry - its one true goal.

Marian Knight, from @mbrrace, agrees skills are lacking. She says breathlessness at rest is not spotted as red flag: “Similarly pain radiating down your left arm, in a 50-year-old man we’d recognise as a heart attack, it’s often dismissed as a bit of heartburn in pregnant women.”

💯 agree. This shouldn’t be just in England either.

Most doctors who have worked with midwives who have been nurses first can see such a clear difference. It's not just the experience and skills, they've generally got an approach and attitude that makes them better colleagues and feel safer

So pleased this is finally being raised. Every time there's any kind of investigation into maternity care it's skirted round that midwifery not being postgraduate in this country is an outlier.
