doing a lot of reading and watching of things. some of the things are esteemed classics and some are garbage. I'm watching grindhouse movies. I'm reading nabokov. I'm rewatching futurama. I've read a bunch of really embarrassing fanfiction. my brain is becoming huge and juicy
I love Edward Gorey’s theory of art: “Art…is presumably about some certain thing, but is really always about something else, and it’s no good having one without the other, because if you just have the something it is boring and if you just have the something else it’s irritating.”
I'd say that writing comics is really similar to songwriting: you HAVE to be formalist, as they're so space-restrictive, and it's worth it to try to find a way to say what you need to say as minimally as possible, otherwise things get bogged down.
Start scenes late, end them as early as possible, every line needs to communicate multiple things. IDK, this is where my head is right now, anyway. There are lots of ways to make a great comic. The best thing is just to go go go and figure out problems/solutions on a case-by-case basis.
I still harbor an immense amount of anger from my youth about underworld looking like the matrix with werewolves but being way worse than the matrix with werewolves I would've made when I was in 7th grade

Ethical art is art that treats everyone involved in the process (from materials to production to creative labor) fairly and with respect—not art that adheres to a specific set of content guidelines. Don't confuse genre trappings or marketing buzzwords with the real obligations we have to each other.
