Once again we wake up to the news of horrible atrocities by Russia through its aerial attacks on Ukraine. Russia must pay for the destruction it has caused. And we are using the proceeds from the immobilised Russian assets to make sure it does.

For the first time ever, Ukraine is joining the 🇪🇺 Civil Protection Mechanism as a provider of assistance. A 70-member Ukrainian firefighting team is on its way to France to help battle the wildfires.

I held a conference call with Commissioners @magnusbrunner.bsky.social and Dubravka Šuica for an update on the situation in Ceuta. The good news is that the vast majority of those who arrived illegally have returned to Morocco, due to the effective work of Spanish and Moroccan law enforcement.

The images coming from Ceuta are unacceptable. We cannot allow anyone to come to our Union without abiding by our rules. Dangerous crossings must stop immediately. Smuggling networks must be dismantled. And returns must be swift, as our rules allow.

My thoughts are with the people of Japan after the devastating earthquake that has already claimed so many lives. We also think of the rescuers that are working tirelessly through the rubble to save those still trapped.

I want to offer my condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of Russia’s latest attacks in the Kyiv region and in Sloviansk. During the strikes, Russia has also destroyed Latvia’s Honorary Consulate. Once again proving its complete disregard for diplomacy.

European airspace has once again been violated by a drone incursion. I commend the Romanian military for their swift and effective response, safeguarding our shared security. Strengthening defence and deterrence along our Eastern border remains a top priority.

I welcome the agreement on the 21st sanctions package against Russia. At a time when Ukraine has built military momentum, our sanctions continue to weaken the economic foundations of Russia’s war effort. We’re adding 32 more Russian banks to our transaction ban list.
