I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA 10 YEAR OLD ME IS LOSING HER MIND (a thread 🧵)

Borrowed the skeleton and fleshed it out with a few of my own thoughts. I really don't want to have to find everyone again in another place, and I refuse to doompost about having to migrate because that helps no one. Send in your feedback!

The proposed updates to the TOS are incredibly concerning and many appear to have been maintained even after feedback from the community.

Bluesky initially appeared to be an amazing platform for both carving out communities and insulating our feeds against content that we don't want to see. There are so many moderation tools available to curate our feeds, from the built-in flag/visibility settings to user-run moderation lists and feeds. Despite all of this, for some reason, you've chosen to push forward on harmful policies that restrict free speech, including:

1 - the restriction of *fictional* kink content (including non-con, dub-con, and anything considered a “dangerous” kink); this content is *fictional* and hurts no one. Almost everyone creating this content is dutiful about labeling; instead of banning it, just prevent it from appearing on certain feeds, like Discovery. Let people who are comfortable with those kinks maintain their own safe community here. Let people who don't want to see it curate their own experience.

2- the restriction of content depicting/discussing self harm, suicide, and substance abuse. By restricting it, and requiring it to be “educational” (a nebulous concept at best), you're putting people coping with those issues at greater harm, not less. Stigmatizing these issues only makes it harder to deal with, and endangers those at the greatest risk.

These were supposed to be bluer skies. Many of us found a home here in the wake of Twitter's decay. If things continue as they are, we'll migrate again and find somewhere where freedom of expression is safeguarded and the policies are more thoughtfully written and designed to actually protect the welfare and interests of the users.

Here's the message I sent in You ABSOLUTELY are welcome to copy/paste or use it as a jumping off point Let them know we don't need this kind of "help"! 3/🧵

I'm writing about the upcoming change to the Bluesky TOS. Bluesky put out a feedback request and despite many people voicing concerns about the changes, very concerning updates have been maintained.

Bluesky has MANY moderation tools that users can utilize themselves to restrict content that they don't want to see without needing to prevent the content from being published on the site as a whole. Aside from content labels, there are user-run moderation lists and feeds so that anyone can curate their content easily.

Despite this, you have chosen to move forward with some incredibly harmful policies that restrict free speech. I implore you to remove the following policies:

1) The restriction of FICTIONAL kink content. Non-con, dub-con, and “dangerous” kink content that is FICTIONAL does not harm anyone.

2) The restriction of content depicting or discussing self harm, suicide, and substance abuse. Requiring content about these subjects to only be “educational” is extremely harmful to those dealing with these issues. Stigma only serves to further endanger people in crisis.

If these policy changes are not removed then I, among many others, will have to look for a different platform to use.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but you don't need to justify your reading preferences and choices to anyone. Audiobooks count as reading. Also, you don't have to finish books you don't enjoy. Don't read to impress, read for yourself. Life's too short, love yourself, ok? Signed, a librarian.
