In large meadows, female ruffs prefer to place their nests close to male leks, even though these are not necessarily the safest locations available #ornithology (Hanna Algora, @chorlnev.bsky.social, @jellybb.bsky.social @vmpakanen.bsky.social et al: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
Nests, Threats, and Leks: Nonrandom Distributions of Nests in Ruffs (Calidris pugnax)
This project investigates the nest distribution of the ruff (Calidris pugnax), an endangered shorebird. Using satellite imaging, we established a suitable breeding area and analyzed the factors influ....

Super Enzyme Regulates Testosterone Levels In Male Ruffs
A single gene in the shorebird species known as ruffs controls the levels of testosterone in males, and this in turn affects their appearance and mating strategies.

How to get rid of too much testosterone? A new study in @science.org by @chorlnev.bsky.social and @jasmineloveland.bsky.social found a single gene in ruffs that down-regulates testosterone directly in their blood. Read more: www.bi.mpg.de/news/2025-01...
A Clever Strategy for Getting Rid of Testosterone
We normally associate high testosterone levels with male dominance and aggression. Among ruffs – a shore bird that breeds across Europe and Asia – some males suffer from too much of it. Together with ...

My latest research on ruffs got published in Science with a stunning cover! Thanks to @alexzemella.bsky.social, @chorlnev.bsky.social, and my wonderful collaborators! A single gene orchestrates androgen variation underlying male mating morphs in ruffs | Science www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
A single gene orchestrates androgen variation underlying male mating morphs in ruffs
Androgens are pleiotropic and play pivotal roles in the formation and variation of sexual phenotypes. We show that differences in circulating androgens between the three male mating morphs in ruff san...
