A LinkedIn message from Jon Oringer that reads: "Hi Stephanie I started Shutterstock 20 years ago. I'm now building an AI assisted comic-book/graphic-novel marketplace. I'm looking for founding creators on an invite-only basis who get paid based on engagement with their content. Let me know if want to check it out. Jon Jon Oringer"A reply to Jon from Stephanie Cooke that reads: "Hi Jon, AI was illegally trained off of artists and creators, without their consent. And now those tools are being used to steal their styles and their years of hard work and education to create knock-offs that can’t begin to compare to what goes into art created by actual humans. This is so incredibly misguided and makes an already predatory industry even harder for real artists to survive and thrive in. I respect what you did with the creation of Shutterstock, but imagine if you were taken out of that equation entirely and someone just typed a prompt into an engine to create that site and product. It would be just as good as what you came up with, right? This new endeavor is such a massive mistake and there’s not a single reputable creator who will attach their name to this. The creators that do come on board to promote AI are grifters who will only bring other grifters to your doorstep. Whatever you create with it for comics and graphic novels has the potential to be tied up in copyright legal battles for years as creators continue to fight for compensation and against the violation of having their work uploaded without their permission. So I guess it’s good that you (presumably) have a lot of money to throw away into the pit that is AI. You won’t return on investment, you won’t gain traction in the world of comics and graphic novels, and I can tell you now that in the mainstream industry, this won’t ever be taken seriously by the level of creators you need for this to succeed. But again, it’s not my money to be wasted. However, the resources that you are using up to support AI are a massive problem that can’t be solved financially, and there won’t be anyone left to create art if you and other AI advocates destroy the planet. -Stephanie"
