‘Arizona Sun’ Gaillardia, a compact and uniform perennial. It produces an abundance of red-orange flowers with fringed petal tips in a vivid, intense yellow. Prefers well-drained, ideally sandy, soil. Blooms from June through the end of October. Attracts butterflies and bees. A floral marvel and a true beauty!

The woman depicted in “Shroud” worked in a textile mill in the American South, where an industry that had supported generations of families was increasingly threatened by closures. American artist Mary Whyte painted her in 2007 while developing “Working South,” a series devoted to people in disappearing occupations. Rather than show the woman at a machine, Whyte surrounds her with the material central to her working life. The result is both a portrait and a reflection on an industry’s decline.

The pale-skinned woman’s head leans to one side, her eyes lowered and her blonde hair streaming toward the left. An expanse of yellow cloth sweeps above her head, curls around her shoulders, and falls in folds along her body. Washes of gold, orange, lime green, and red animate the fabric, while deep blue-black shadows fill the surrounding space. Her mature face is modeled with delicate precision, in contrast to the broad, fluid strokes of the cloth. Its almost weightless movement makes her stillness striking. No hands emerge from the folds, leaving her expression as the painting’s most immediate human detail.

Whyte was born in Ohio, studied at Philadelphia’s Tyler School of Art, and settled in coastal South Carolina in 1991. She became known for watercolors of women in the Gullah community near Charleston. For “Working South,” she traveled through ten Southern states to depict mill workers, farmers, fishermen, and others whose labor was often overlooked. Writing about “Shroud” in her 2011 book “Painting Portraits and Figures in Watercolor,” she explained that the model worked in a textile mill and that the painting conveyed her feelings about the mills’ demise rather than a literal workplace scene.

A shroud is a covering associated especially with death, and here it can suggest the fading of a livelihood and a way of life. Yet the woman is neither erased nor reduced to a symbol as Whyte gives her a distinct face, a moment of quiet, and a commanding presence.

An unnamed Filipina in the final years of Spanish colonial rule is surrounded by objects associated with everyday work and trade. She stands looking to the left away from us. A woven basket filled with sticks rests on her head, while she cradles an umbrella across her chest. A fish hangs from her lowered hand, and a rooster stands nearby. Wooden structures, baskets, and scattered materials fill a shadowed rural household or marketplace.

Her loose white blouse with lace-edged sleeves accompanies a red-and-yellow checked skirt, a deep blue wrap around her hips, and an orange cloth draped over her shoulders. These layers recall the baro’t saya, the traditional Filipino blouse-and-skirt ensemble, with its tapis overskirt and pañuelo shoulder covering. Rocha carefully distinguishes the softness of the fabric, the reflective surface of the fish, and the coarse weaving of the basket. Her steady posture and calm expression bring dignity to a scene associated with physical labor.

Filipino artist Lorenzo de la Rocha Icaza was born in Manila and trained in both the Philippines and Spain. He returned from Madrid to teach at Manila’s academy of painting, sculpture, and engraving, becoming its director in 1893. His European academic training is displayed in the detailed modeling and balanced composition, while the woman and clothing firmly locate the painting in the Philippines.

Created in 1895, three years before Spanish colonial rule ended, “Mujer filipina” became part of a group of paintings presented to Spanish official and art patron Ángel Avilés Merino following his visit to the Manila art school. His collection subsequently entered the Museo de Bellas Artes de Córdoba (Museum of Fine Arts of Córdoba).

The painting can be viewed both as a sympathetic portrayal of a working woman and as an image shaped by the artistic institutions and colonial relationships of its time. Although the woman's identity remains unknown, her presence gives the work an enduring character.
