Intro 1077: Stop NYPD from holding someone past their release time for immigration agents unless they have a judicial warrant. Intro 1078: Limit communication b/t NYC's Dept. of Correction and immigration agents. Intro 209: Enable immigrants to sue NYPD, DOC, or Probation for detainer violations.

In the wake of ICE’s shooting, NYC must end all forms of collaboration with ICE. We cannot claim to be a sanctuary city when the NYPD enables ICE's abuses or the NYC Department of Corrections regularly transfers people to ICE custody. No one should be funneled into the hands of this violent, rogue, and unaccountable agency. We can close the gaps in our city’s sanctuary laws and protect New Yorkers from ICE by passing Intros 1077 & 1078, and Intro 209, the NYC Trust Act. It’s time to end the city’s relationship with ICE, full stop.

It also goes beyond the payouts: for immigrant NYers, City Hall’s failure to deliver meaningful policing reform comes at a particularly dangerous moment, as the Trump administration’s increased federal immigration enforcement heightens the consequences of police contact for immigrant New Yorkers.

For immigrant NYers this is about more than the payouts: 9 mos into Mamdani’s first year, the NYPD itself has changed little... continuing the kinds of enforcement practices that disproportionately bring immigrants into contact w/police make them more vulnerable to Trump’s mass deportation machine.

NYPD Misconduct Payouts Still Soar Under Mamdani -- And May Keep Growing

So far, NYPD settlement payouts under Mamdani are holdovers. Without policy changes, they might keep skyrocketing.
