🧠 Is hierarchical reasoning uniquely human, or do we share this capacity across species and development? Our new paper in Cognition, "Flexibility of hierarchical reasoning across age and species," explores how humans and non-humans flexibly deploy recursive strategies! 🧵👇 doi.org/10.1016/j.co...

Oh well. The brewers earned it. Hope they beat the dodgers too.
New w/ @drbarner.bsky.social in Cognitive Science! We explored how kids learn the “later-greater” principle — the idea that numbers that come later in a count are greater in magnitude. Turns out this simple property governing the count system doesn't come easy! dx.doi.org/10.1111/cogs... 1/6
One, Two, Three, Four… What's More? Successor Relations, not Mappings to Approximate Magnitudes, Support Learning the Later‐Greater Principle
As we count up, number words that occur later in our count denote greater quantities. Here, we tested whether children's understanding of this “later-greater” principle originates from associating nu...

Hey folks, I'll be considering PhD applications for the 2026-27 cycle over here at Duke Psych. To learn more about the lab, check us out at www.mindandculturelab.com and/or read through this short FAQ for prospective students: www.mindandculturelab.com/faq
nice case study in how apparently robust "failures" in animal cognition research can be due to simple, boring performance errors rather than reflecting fundamental differences in cognition (ditto for children)
Chimpanzees usually fail a simple pointing task that human infants and dogs pass. In our new iScience paper, we provide a possible explanation: once their attention is engaged, chimpanzees use human pointing to find hidden food 73% of the time. Attention may be the missing piece.
For NBC News, I spoke with the mother of Corey Ruiz's 13-year-old daughter, Marjorie Ann Aliomar.
New paper finally out in @NatureComms with E. Leib, D. O’Shaughnessy, C. Gallardo, @sferrigno.bsky.social, and @spiantado.bsky.social. 📝Children across cultures discover the latent algorithms that structure what they see, even without instruction, feedback, or formal schooling.🧵 tinyurl.com/4a238m2d
#FeatureSession Alert! #EarlyCareerAwardWinner Stephen Ferrigno Stephen Ferrigno presents his work showing that monkeys and humans use similar, queue-like memory systems for hierarchical sequences, challenging traditional models of how structured information is represented #CO32026 🧪
