I cover the NHL and Columbus Blue Jackets for The Athletic. Sportswriting since 1986.

#CBJ Jet Greaves throwing out the ceremonial first pitch tonight before the @CLBClippers game in picturesque Huntington Park. Asked which pitch from his dazzling repertoire he’ll be throwing, Greaves said it’s as yet undecided. “I hope I get it somewhere close to the catcher.”

The Athletic: Portzline | #CBJ have been given a pass for their on-ice struggles by many fans through the years. They’d better be careful. Handling of radio voice Bob McElligott, writer Jeff Svoboda have angered the most ardent fans and tarnished an image. www.nytimes.com/athletic/749...

Team president Mike Priest said the team doesn't take fan support "for granted," but recent decisions have raised significant ire.

Five teams now have gone to a radio-TV simulcast. What's behind the change, and what are listeners missing?

Told there’s nothing happening with #CBJ on the Kirill Marchenko front, despite rumors out of Russia to the contrary. Not saying it can’t change later this summer. But my understanding is #CBJ have not had calls on Marchenko since earlier this summer.

#CBJ still in talks with G Jet Greaves in the hope of reaching agreement on a long-term contract before Thursday's arbitration hearing. In lieu of a deal, GM Don Waddell / two others from the front office will fly to Toronto this evening. The hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. ET.

The Athletic: Blue Jackets Monday Gathering 1. RFAs, like #CBJ Adam Fantilli, now have enormous power/leverage 2. Arbitration is no longer such a feared process 3. Snacks: key #CBJ AHLers will need waivers, 2026-27 schedule out Thursday, new numbers, etc www.nytimes.com/athletic/744...

Offer sheets are reshaping the NHL's RFA market, and the Blue Jackets are watching closely amid Adam Fantilli, Kirill Marchenko talks.

The Athletic: Blue Jackets Monday Gathering 1. After summer adds / exits, a projected #CBJ lineup 2. RFA waiting game 3. Fare thee well, Boone Jenner 4. Snacks: Lundeström’s Achilles, coach in waiting?, the next captain, Bootland joins AHL Cleveland, etc. www.nytimes.com/athletic/742...

There's a chance that the Blue Jackets' lineup is currently settled, once they get all of their restricted free agents signed.

#CBJ G Jet Greaves and F Cole Sillinger, both restricted free agents, have until 5 pm ET today to file for arbitration. So far, neither has, but still 4+ hours to go. If they file, they’re no longer eligible for an offer sheet. RFA F Adam Fantilli is not eligible for arbitration.

The Athletic: Blue Jackets Monday Gathering 1. Dylan Larkin unlikely for #CBJ, but pressure mounts to win 2. RFA’s slow-rolling second contracts 3. Coach carousel churns 4. Snacks: No. 14 pick available, Sergei Ivanov talks, Egor Zamula to KHL?, and more www.nytimes.com/athletic/733...

Larkin and Columbus defenseman Zach Werenski are close friends, but would the Blue Jackets make Larkin's trade list?

The Athletic: Blue Jackets mailbag, Part 1 What can #CBJ GM Don Waddell do to improve a middling roster? Is adding a top-6 player a pipe dream? Which UFAs are staying? Where do RFA talks stand? Why has Waddell spared his scouting staff after Lindstrom? www.nytimes.com/athletic/732...

The Athletic: Blue Jackets Stanley Cup contender checklist Zach Werenski is a star. Jet Greaves looks like a No. 1. But for #CBJ to join the beasts in the East, Adam Fantilli and Kirill Marchenko must elevate among the NHL’s top forwards w @domluszczyszyn www.nytimes.com/athletic/732...

The Blue Jackets have plenty of holes at the top of their lineup, but they also have players who could potentially level up.

Now that AHL Cleveland has been eliminated from the playoffs - they lost Game 5 to @TorontoMarlies on Sunday - I would expect an announcement in coming days that Trent Vogelhuber will be promoted from @monstershockey head coach to join Rick Bowness’ staff as a #CBJ assistant.

#CBJ have settled in for a long offseason. Let’s talk about it. Putting together a Blue Jackets mailbag, and it’s your questions that set the conversation. Hit me up here - at the link or just here on Bluesky, and I’ll get to as many as possible. www.nytimes.com/athletic/730...
