Helen pled with Dale to marry her and at least, return that part of their lives to what it once was, but it was evident that they could not do this. There was only one thing both of them could do; they should do their jobs, and new adventures were waiting. #TheNewsreader

Helen was looking forward to her new posting in Washington the year ahead. While trying to assemble her team, she is sabotaged by her former boss, and Noelene felt torn between this incredible opportunity and her fresh engagement to Rob. #TheNewsreader

Helen arrived on Dale’s doorstep, sharing that Evelyn had told her that Donna Gillies had information about a tryst Dale had with a cameraman, and Dale realised that the decision he made regarding Gerry would have a roll on effect for him too. #TheNewsreader

Allegations of soliciting in a public toilet in Sydney and an arrest shadowed over Gerry and his family, and despite Dale’s devastation for his friend, his higher ups were breathing down his neck to drop Gerry from the Bicentennial telecast. #TheNewsreader

The News At Six team looked different in January 1988. After Helen’s public resignation in 1987, Dale at last addressed the rumours of their split on air on the Gerry Carroll Show, and so it would just be him, Rob and Gerry on air for the Bicentennial special. #TheNewsreader

While Bicentennial fireworks exploded up above, there were other implosions and explosions for the former and current News At Six family to navigate, and a need to do one’s job, no matter what. S02E06 of #TheNewsreader aired three years ago today, concluding Season Two. 15/10/2023

Gerry and Tim watched on at the club, increasingly concerned about their friend, and they began to ponder whether it had been a good idea to invite Dale to come with them to Club 397 in the first place. #ChaiHansen #RoryFleckByrne #SamReid #TheNewsreader

Even the sons of News At Six were finding the strain of model images hard to bear. Dale; freshly separated from Helen, realised that there was no sort of a place for him, and he barely got through the News At Six Christmas party without falling apart. #TheNewsreader

Noelene was facing her first ever Christmas lunch with Rob’s extended family, which she hoped would present her as the model girlfriend, but after a phone call from the office, she wondered whether she was truly a family girl, or perhaps instead a career girl? #TheNewsreader

When Kay brought a story to News At Six that would be a ratings winner, Helen questioned what was the most ethical thing to do, and was upholding News At Six worth the consequences of this story airing for Kay? #AnnaTorv #PhilippaNortheast #TheNewsreader

For three women in ‘A Model Daughter’; #HelenNorville, #NoeleneKim and #KayWalters, they had to balance upholding personal images, institutions and reputations, while also having aspirations of their own. #AnnaTorv #MichelleLimDavidson #PhilippaNortheast #TheNewsreader

It was almost Christmas in 1987, but the trials and tribulations of life carried on. The daughters and sons of News At Six had decisions to make; would they live their truths, or would they continue to be model children? S02E05 of #TheNewsreader aired three years ago today. 8/10/2023

It is a grouse Newsreader birthday today! 💖🎉🎂 Wishing the super sweet #MariaAngelico a beautiful birthday, from fans of #TheNewsreader everywhere. Thank you Ms Angelico for all the sparkle you brought to #CherylRicci over all three seasons 💖🌟📺

The Hungry Truth is a deeply uncomfortable episode of #TheNewsreader; one where we would hope Indigenous voices would get to be heard, but viewers are left to sit with the discomfort of their voices being pushed aside for colonial power structures + pageantry. That is the truth.

Dale plodded along with rumours of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s split, Noelene came to realise that Rob could not see that her existence and truth differed to his, and after a disastrous bulletin, a marriage proposal understandably resulted in a “no.” #TheNewsreader

Helen was desperate to get Lynus on air to share his message that was cut from Geoff’s broadcast, but as she followed the activist around, she realised that sometimes you cannot meet someone half way, and that Indigenous voices continued to be silenced. #TheNewsreader

But Australia as we knew it had a black history, built on the stolen lands of the country’s First Nations people, and an opposing voice to the Bicentennial celebrations took Helen’s attention; the activist #LynusPreston. #HunterPageLochard #RobertTaylor #TheNewsreader

1988 would mark two hundred years of colonisation in this Australia, and much of the country was getting ready for a year long birthday party. Cheesy Australiana promos flooded the airwaves, and the approaching new year would be coloured green and gold. #TheNewsreader

In December 1987, Australia was on the verge of celebration. As we approached the Bicentennial, we were reminded that Australia had a Black history, and to remain hungry for the truth of this nation. S02E04 of #TheNewsreader aired three years ago today. 1/10/2023

My Pa is the loveliest, most thoughtful man you could meet. He saw this interview with our wonderful #PhilippaNortheast in The Sunday Telegraph in August, and went to the effort of saving the clipping for me. I am now sharing my Pa's efforts with all of you ❤️🌟 #TheNewsreader

But throughout the crashing markets and the personal turmoil for some, there was still time for a lunch at colleague’s home, and a chance to take the pressure down, gather round the piano and dream a little dream of better times ahead. #TheNewsreader

As Helen pled her case to Charlie, and Kay’s addiction reached a devastating new height, Noelene realised that a fresh wardrobe would not change the way the world saw her, and Dale reflected upon whether the way he loved really did fit in anywhere. #TheNewsreader

It was hard for #HelenNorville and #KayWalters to think of much else aside from the thought of their fears being realised, whether it be an exposé on teenage institutionalisation in the paper, or one’s parents finding out where all their money had disappeared to. #TheNewsreader

In the decade of excess and extravagance, the stock market crash of 1987 shook some to their very core, and in a little media corner of Melbourne, two women were on the verge of having their fears realised. S02E03 of #TheNewsreader aired three years ago today. 24/09/2023
