“It’s really important for ProPublica that we have reporters who aren’t just parachuting in … but who actually live in the communities,” says reporter Jennifer Smith Richards. “The problem is that … we’re not paid the same.” Help ProPublica’s workers fight for fair pay: www.propublicaguild.org

ProPublica events manager Rocio Ortega has taken on Uber Eats and DoorDash deliveries to make ends meet. This shouldn’t be any of our workers’ financial reality. We need a contract that guarantees all our members fair pay: www.propublicaguild.org

“I have heard from our managers at ProPublica that they don’t intend to replace us with AI. And that’s great. But we’re gonna need that in writing.” This is why we’re fighting for protections against artificial intelligence:

We asked @propublica.org's board to agree to a fair contract. Chair Paul Sagan replied that they support management, whose last offer includes weak job security, minimal guardrails on AI & wages that don’t keep up w/ rising costs. We know you stand with us. Tell Mr. Sagan: shorturl.at/MkUbQ

1/ Happy International Workers' Day to all our fellow workers and unions! ✊ ICYMI, our bargaining unit exercised our collective power to walk out on a one-day strike last month, as we fight for a fair contract.

A group of about 40 people stand or squat on a sidewalk. Many have fists raised in the air. Many are hodling signs that read "ON ULP STRIKE", "PROPUBLICA WORKERS DESERVE FAIR PAY", "THOUGHTS NOT BOTS", and "PROPUBLICA WORKERS HEART A FAIR CONTRACT". A group of about 8 people stand on the sidewalk in front of a table covered in signs. The signs say "PROPUBLICA WORKERS ON STRIKE FOR A FAIR CONTRACT" and "HONK". The people are holding signs and smiling.

I love working at @propublica.org. I'm on strike for the day because I want it to be a better place to work, for everyone. Please support our fight for a fair contract.

The news has moved on, but ICE is still in Minneapolis. My neighbors are still patrolling streets, driving strangers to work, and providing aid. As a photojournalist at @propublica.org, I wanted to know: What do they look like in their daily lives? So I picked up my camera 👇

Four portraits of Minnesota residents inside and outside their homes. From left to right: A woman in a hijab, an older woman wearing a red whistle, an elderly couple in winter coats standing in the snow, and a woman wearing a buttoned-up cardigan and dark blue jeans.

BREAKING: The two federal immigration agents who fired on Minneapolis protester Alex Pretti are identified in government records as Border Patrol agent Jesus Ochoa and Customs and Border Protection officer Raymundo Gutierrez.

EMTALA requires universal care for “emergency medical conditions” regardless of a person’s insurance status. In the decades since its passage, some patients have died hours after failing to receive care they were legally entitled to. By @emcahan.bsky.social

Psychiatric Hospitals Turn Away Patients Who Need Urgent Care. The Facilities Face Few Consequences.

Discharging patients who are at risk of harming themselves or others is illegal. But dozens of psychiatric hospitals aren’t honoring the law — and the government isn’t following up.
