Happy Midwinter to all Antarctic folks. A year ago today, I was at Elephant Island, where Shackleton and his men were marooned for months before the amazing journey to South Georgia and ultimate rescue. Elephant Island is just outside the Antarctic Circle, so we did see a sunrise, albeit briefly.

A picture is worth 1000 words... This appeared on the BBC News today, showing the increase in solar electric generation in the UK. Not sure who produced it, but genuinely think this is a genius piece of scientific communication - the construct and choice of colour scale is near-perfect. Chapeau!

I am co-convening a meeting at the Royal Society later this year, with @krhendry.bsky.social and other very excellent polar science colleagues. If you have interests relating to Antarctica and the impacts of climate change, please consider participating!

Some personal reflections, at the end of a remarkable expedition... we've seen amazing things, and experienced Antarctica in the depths of its dark winter. We're returning home with an unparalleled dataset, and a deeper appreciation of this awe-inspiring place. www.bas.ac.uk/media-post/r...
