Belonging and connection are powerful protective factors in moments of crisis. American Indian and Alaska Native communities face the highest suicide rates in the country, reflecting long-standing barriers to care. California has the largest Native American population in the nation.
Elan Javanfard, Senior Director of Whole Person Care at Didi Hirsch, had the privilege of presenting at the National Council for Mental Wellbeing's annual #NatCon26 this week. He presented on leading for longevity in crisis care along with Travis Atkinson of TBD Solutions.
AB 1988, our sponsored bill authored by @asmgailpellerin.bsky.social continues to move forward. The bill passed out of the Assembly Committee on Privacy and Consumer Protection yesterday with a unanimous 14-0 vote and now heads to the Assembly Health Committee next week!
What happens when someone in crisis turns to AI instead of a person? Didi Hirsch is sponsoring AB 1988, a bill that would require chatbots to pause and connect users to real support like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline if they show signs of suicidal thoughts.
