3/4 In a new World View article published in Nature Sustainability, IIASA Senior Research Scholar @dilekfraisl.bsky.social explains why citizen science and other participatory approaches should play a greater role in developing indicators and methodologies.

2/4 Indicators reflect political choices: whose knowledge is valued, what evidence counts, and which issues are emphasized or overlooked. These choices shape international action on climate, biodiversity, and sustainable development.

1/4 ๐Ÿ“Š How we measure progress towards global sustainability goals influences what gets prioritized, funded, and acted upon. But the indicators underpinning international frameworks are not simply objective measures.

Our new paper on #urban #sustainability argues that while cities are central to achieving #SustainableDevelopment, they struggle with incomplete or non-disaggregated data. #CitizenScience could support 70% of urban indicators, yet itโ€™s used in only 4% of cases: www.nature.com/articles/s42...

โ“What if communities rated public services themselves? In Ghana, the Ghana Statistical Service, @undp-gpcg.bsky.social, and IIASA tested a citizen-led, inclusive app to do just that - spotting gaps, boosting voices often left out. More information: iiasa.ac.at/news/jun-202...

Happenning now! If youโ€™re at the #EGU25 today come hear my presentation on #citizenscience #SDGs and co-creating with communities in room -2.33.

Professor @mhaklay.bsky.social teams up with @iiasa.ac.at researchers to explore how #AI and #CitizenScience can drive progress on the #SDGs. Together, theyโ€™re tackling data gaps and making sustainable development goals more achievable. #SustainableDevelopment #TechForGood

๐Ÿ“ฃ The recent CitSci Africa conference in Nairobi showcased the power of regional networks. The Citizen Science Global Partnership, which Fraisl and colleagues represent, are ready to guide UN agencies in leveraging citizen data for the SDGs and sustainable development.

๐Ÿ’ก Funding Matters: sustainable data-gathering needs funding, including pay for participants, where possible, especially in underserved communities.

โœ… Existing Partnerships: #citizenscience initiatives and academia collaborate with robust methods for #data and policymaking, supported by associations like the Citizen Science Global Partnership and the European Citizen Science Association.
