3/4 In a new World View article published in Nature Sustainability, IIASA Senior Research Scholar @dilekfraisl.bsky.social explains why citizen science and other participatory approaches should play a greater role in developing indicators and methodologies.

2/4 Indicators reflect political choices: whose knowledge is valued, what evidence counts, and which issues are emphasized or overlooked. These choices shape international action on climate, biodiversity, and sustainable development.

1/4 📊 How we measure progress towards global sustainability goals influences what gets prioritized, funded, and acted upon. But the indicators underpinning international frameworks are not simply objective measures.

📣 The recent CitSci Africa conference in Nairobi showcased the power of regional networks. The Citizen Science Global Partnership, which Fraisl and colleagues represent, are ready to guide UN agencies in leveraging citizen data for the SDGs and sustainable development.

💡 Funding Matters: sustainable data-gathering needs funding, including pay for participants, where possible, especially in underserved communities.

✅ Existing Partnerships: #citizenscience initiatives and academia collaborate with robust methods for #data and policymaking, supported by associations like the Citizen Science Global Partnership and the European Citizen Science Association.
