Today on The Fingers Podcast, I'm joined by @risenc.bsky.social to discuss the humble beginnings, inglorious grotesques, and latter-day deflations of the country's bourbon boom.

i ventured out in the deluge yesterday to grab some footage of the flooding at chimbo alley. there was a literal wave forming back there lol:
With all the torrential downpours this summer, it's as good a time as any to talk about the still-missing stormwater management permit for Chimborazo Playground's still-paused pétanque court expansion. ☔️
has anybody read a good profile elucidating weingarten’s whole deal? on ai she seems like an abject sucker (or worse), but i don’t really know much about her beyond that. is this par for the course with her?
“Teaching educators about AI is a ‘moral imperative’, said Randi Weingarten, the AFT president.” “And without outside funding, it was a choice between taking big tech’s money or doing nothing, she said.”
1. va law says 20ft from the intersection 2. rva ordinance says 30ft from the sign. 3. richmond dpw does poor job w/ signage & actively resists painting curbs, exacerbating the confusion. 4. car owners freak out at enforcement, with a kernel of legitimacy. 5. city council proposes reduction.
Richmond re-considers parking restrictions near stop signs after 280% ticket spike
Richmond may cut its stop sign parking restriction from 30 to 20 feet after a 280% spike in tickets, mostly in the city's second district.

again, if i had a calculator that gave me the wrong answer one (1) time, i would throw it out and never use it again and could probably bankrupt the company by simply telling people what happened
Gotta love the “or stocks” part. Like Gemini realized its first answer was nuts so it tried to wedge in a better one.
One of the silliest lawsuits in the beverage-alcohol business may finally be coming to an end
9th Cir. holds that the Bad Spaniels parody toy of a Jack Daniel's bottle is unlikely to harm the reputation of Jack Daniel's trademarks *because* it is parody. Held: no dilution by tarnishment; remanded for entry of judgment in favor of Bad Spaniels maker. cdn.ca9.uscourts.gov/datastore/op...
INBOX: The Charleston company behind Chicken Cock and a bunch of other also-ran liquor brands sold "certain brand assets" to another firm. No word on whether Liberal Tears, the right-wing pander-brand whiskey backed by Rob Schneider and Kevin Sorbo, made the cut.

Opinion | I Helped Run Lululemon. The A.I. Revolution Is a Hot Mess.
The A.I. revolution is stalling because companies don’t want to admit that integrating the technology is expensive and slow and requires human effort.

This week at @chlookout.bsky.social I took a look at how 7th District Councilmember and current Richmond City Council President Cynthia Newbille's office distributes information to her constituents. Even by the fairly low standards of her political peers, her output is, ah, limited. More:
As l’affair pétanque has ably demonstrated, what we have here in the East End is a failure to communicate. But while city officials could certainly improve their outreach to the neighborhood’s residents, a recent investigation suggests that Church Hill’s longtime city councilmember could, too.
the mainstream press has started running one of *these* essays like once a month. i have yet to encounter one that breaks meaningful ground. no such luck here:
What Else Do We Lose When People Give Up Booze? (Gift Article)
Yes, there are many benefits of cutting back. But bars are closing. Jobs are going away. And a way of being together can feel harder to find.

the wine press runs one of these essays like once a quarter. i could basically reconstruct it from memory. it doesn't matter how people *within the trade* talk about wine *to each other*! you have to persuade *new* customers! why are you still fucking this doorknob!
…and that’s bad, right? we’re allowed to say that’s bad?

BeatBox has already turned Anheuser-Busch InBev into one of the country’s top wine suppliers. The American drinking public's pivot to riot punch is well underway, but as I wrote at Fingers, legacy winemakers continue to mostly stay on the sidelines.

I went to Richmond Parks' latest community meeting about l'affair pétanque last week to hear about its plan for what comes next. The upshot: it wants to do a simple majority-rules vote... but anybody can vote... and it's conducting this via Google Form. More:
Each option for Chimborazo Playground includes renovations to the park’s bathroom facilities and water fountain, which have been out of service for years. Beyond the new plumbing, though, paths diverge—and only one includes finishing DPR's polarizing, now-paused expansion of the pétanque courts.
