As with so much, the narrative box-heavy double whammy of The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen. It was a slow fade-out from there, until they became practically extinct by the early 00s. You can still find them in the wild, though. @mooncalfe1.bsky.social’s Supergirl, for example. #ngl

By stripping him of his memory and forcing him to work in a prison camp, "The Forgotten" attempts to explore Bruce Wayne's empathy for the downtrodden. It's not completely successful, but it is a reminder that this version of Bruce at least wants to be a little more than an ivory tower vigilante.
