“You’re late,” he said, his voice coated in whisky, smoke, and unearned confidence. The scrape of heels in dirt dragged behind her as a deranged man babbled something about flies and change. A beastling woman drowned him out with calls to buy spicy grilled chicken called sika from her cart.
“By the spirits, Royce, where were you?!”
He took a drag, plucking the lit stick from his lips with gloved fingers. “Here? Waiting for you?”
She stomped into the cleaners, dragging him in by the forearm. “I was pounding on your door for ages, and you’ve been here the whole time?”
“Yep.” He watched her slam her ticket on the counter, sending the cleaner scurrying away. “Neighbors are gonna be pissed.”
“Royce, I paid a kid four tiraj to pound on your door. You owe me.”
“No you didn’t, and no I don’t.” She threw him a confused look before taking her robes and boots into a nearby changing room. “More like you paid some kid to go away. I’ll bet he took off as soon as you left him alone.”
“That’s not…” she paused, her fresh shirt halfway on. “Did I?”
“Probably.”
After making him swear to not bring up this mistake again, they rushed south towards the palace, a colonnade of spires that from a distance looked like they were floating above Meadas. On closer inspection, the palace was suspended above the Silk River by four bridges arcing up from the outer ring of the palace grounds and the Reynaguard’s headquarters.
It was a short trip past the richest part of the Commercial District, the Glittering Capstone — colloquially known as “The Cap” — before Ana and Royce were standing before two stone-faced Reynaguard at the gate. A booze-stained page flopped from Royce’s fingers in front of them: the Matriarch’s summons. The guards shared a look. One squinted at the smudged calligraphy.
“You’re late.”
“Nope. I was on-time. She was late.” Ana’s aqua eyes turned to slits in her round, onyx face. If they hadn’t been friends since they were kids, she would’ve strangled him.

“Let ‘em in!” the guard called back before turning to his partner. “Escort them.”
Through one comically-large iron-reinforced gate and up one long white stepped stone bridge to the castle and they were greeted by two gargantuan faceless guards — easily over seven feet tall — in heavy full-plate with greatswords planted point-down at their feet. Greatswords nearly as tall as the Reynaguard captain they flanked: Captain Xin Vess of the 4th Reynaguard. With white close-cropped hair and pale skin, she was a hard, mean woman made meaner-looking by a ragged scar slashed straight across her blind right eye.
Or perhaps she was meaner because she had been waiting fifteen minutes for Ana and Royce’s arrival.
