Strong point from Lewis Goodall's substack: "Burnham’s will to devolve will be tested early- because he wants the most activist state for decades while simultaneously weakening the centre that would have to deliver it."

Today's IMF intervention is unwelcome. The entrenchment of the gospel of fiscal austerity is no surprise (but look how well that has served us, and how it doesn't work even on its own terms) - but telling us how to run our NHS? Yeah, no thanks.

When Baroness Hallett concludes that there was no evidence of corruption or cronyism around the Covid VIP lanes, I suppose we have to believe her. But it's hard: 1) Isn't the fact of the VIP lanes in itself evidence of corruption? 2) Didn't they give contracts to friends, family and local publicans?

The BBC, intimidated and infiltrated under the Tories, lost its guts and its mojo. The political assault combined editorial attack with a critique of the licence fee as poor value (which it isn't) and as 'regressive' - a low move from politicians who gave precisely no f*cks for the hard up.

I once had a milkshake lobbed at me. (I was driving a convertible past the Latchmere in Battersea and some kids hurled abuse and a McDonald's milkshake into the car.) Despite this, the Home Office, has provided no protection. Could someone please send £5m to keep me safe?

The Prime Minister may be changing, but here's what's not changing: offshore billionaire ownership of almost all of Britain's press, obsessed with protecting wealth and persuading those who are struggling that the blame for their plight belongs to those who are even worse off;
