1/10 I spent my PhD at ETH Zürich building pieces of an eDNA puzzle. Now I see them fit together in our new paper! Years of method development, fieldwork and ideas that once seemed out of reach. Here is what we found, and what I think comes next.
1/ Six years ago, during my master's, I developed one of the early prototypes of passive eDNA samplers. Now I find myself coming back to it, asking a slightly different question: What actually happens to eDNA once on these samplers?
A small piece of happy news: two papers we published in 2024 ended up in the top 10% most-read papers in their respective journals. It's so gratifying to know that our work is having an impact!
Most days I do my science at the University, and my art at home. Sometimes, I get to bring the art with me to the University. Great 2-day workshop with students from @ethz.ch and @uzh-ch.bsky.social. I was amazed to see how naturally everyone was able to pick up watercolor techniques and vision.

We kicked off this semester's #SMEE with two great talks by @dnasaur.bsky.social and @phagemuffin.bsky.social. @usyseth.bsky.social
🚀 Excited to share our new paper: “Navigating Past Oceans: Comparing #Metabarcoding and #Metagenomics of Marine Ancient Sediment eDNA” DOI: doi.org/10.1111/1755... We dive into 8,000 years of marine life from Skagerrak sediments to show what different tools tell us about past #oceans! 🌊🧬
Navigating Past Oceans: Comparing Metabarcoding and Metagenomics of Marine Ancient Sediment Environmental DNA
The condition of ancient marine ecosystems provides context for contemporary biodiversity changes in human-impacted oceans. Sequencing sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) is an emerging method for gene...

How, what, and where of environmental DNA #eDNA 🤔 Happy to share our newest publication exploring how volume of water processed and the pore size of the filter impacts the diversity of plant and animal communities captured via metabarcoding. (1/8) onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
How, What, and Where You Sample Environmental DNA Affects Diversity Estimates and Species Detection
This study evaluates the impact of two eDNA capture methods—grab samples and tow nets—on species detection and diversity assessment in various aquatic environments in Minnesota, Florida, and Switzerl...

Last year, biologists and hydrologists met at #eDNA4Hydro workshop in Bern, Switzerland to learn from each other and explore the intersection of our fields via eDNA. What we found was a new flow path (1/n) wires.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
A new flow path: eDNA connecting hydrology and biology
Genetic material collected in environments such as water is known as environmental DNA (eDNA) and is revolutionizing biodiversity assessment. However, eDNA also has untapped potential to solve hydrol....
