Attended my first furrycon yesterday. A bit strange. I've been an observer/consumer of furry stuff since the 1980s but not a member of the fandom itself. Was busy in Industrial/Goth culture in the interim, but now I took the plunge. Was nice. Genuinely nice & welcoming, living up to its rep.

A couple weeks ago Chief Justice Wagner was asked about SRLs. He mused their numbers are up at the SCC to a record degree. I track this data. He might be right. 45.8% of 2026 SCC leave applications are by SRLs. My data is the previous record was 34.1% (2016). The average from 1997-2025 is 24%.

Spree murderer Valery Fabrikant died in Archambault Institution prison on July 27. In 1992 he killed four other engineering academics, blaming authorship issues. Now he's dead. I can relax (a little) about being sued by Valery. He's what I've called a "hyperactive litigant".

I attended (virtually) the first International Pseudolaw Research Network conference law week. Thoroughly enjoyed the speakers and discussion. But there were times when my eyes glazed over as discussion turned to philosophers and high concepts of linguistics and law theory.

On June 3, 2024 the Supreme Court of Canada eliminated all filing fees to initiate an appeal or seek leave to appeal. The amount had been $75. On Wednesday Wagner CJC expressed concern that SRL appeals at that court are now over 40% of input leave applications. OH REELLY?!

It's sometimes hard to believe the little field I've written in for years is expanding so much! One further indication is the newly formed International Pseudolaw Research Network. The website is here: pseudolaw.org It's largely a seedling at this point, but it will grow. So very exciting.

Speaking of conferences, the newly formed International Pseudolaw Research Network is holding online and in-person events on June 18-19. Registration is free, and it looks like the "in person" part has the option to watch online. I'll be observing but not presenting.
