I run Dogasu's Backpack, a website dedicated to the Japanese animated series Pocket Monsters ("Pokémon"). 日本在住のアメリカ人です He/Him/His. http://linktr.ee/dogasusbackpack #anipoke

Is there anyplace Pokémon fans go to talk about the Pokémon manga? The message boards on the major fansites have all gotten rid of their manga sections, nobody seems to be talking about it on Twitter/Bluesky...I guess Reddit has some activity, but is there anywhere else people go?

Pichu & Pikachu's Winter Holiday 2001 "We Pichu Brothers: The Balloon Incident." A spin-off of the Pichu short released alongside the Entei movie, this episode shows the Pichu Bros having a fight, stealing balloons, and inadvertently creating an elaborate ice slide. #DogasuWatchesJohto

I was looking through the Johto TV broadcast schedule just now, and did you know that the Pocket Monsters animated series didn't take a *single* week off in the year 2001? We got 52 regular episodes, PLUS a theatrical film, PLUS a 90 minute TV special 😱 Absolutely unthinkable in the modern era.

Episode 178 "Popocco! The Grass Pokémon Battle!!" Satoshi enters a Grass-Type Pokémon tournament. The tournament itself is amusing enough, I guess, but the episode does a really bad job of making Popocco stand out from literally every other Grass-Type in this show. #DogasuWatchesJohto

Episode 177 "Flap Your Wings, Yanyanma! To the Sky of Tomorrow!!" A glassmaker struggles with stopping a dragonfly from breaking windows in a town filled with the most gullible people ever. This episode makes the Yanyanma species seem pretty charming. #DogasuWatchesJohto

Episode 175 "Nyarth and Bulu and Granbulu!?" Kaneyo and Bulu both get stronger. This one's...perfectly fine. The comedy's pretty solid, with both Kaneyo and the Rocket trio delivering at all times, but at the same time I can't help but feel a bit underwhelmed by the whole thing #DogasuWatchesJohto

Episode 174 "Aim to be a Metamon Master! Imite Returns!!" Imite comes back in what is mostly a rehash of her first appearance. The sudden focus on Sonansu's moveset is admittedly a bit odd, especially after last week, but there's enough good stuff here to make that a non-issue. #DogasuWatchesJohto

Episode 173 "The Village of Sonansu!?" Yuji Ueda gets to try out all the different Sonansu voices he's come up with over the last year or so. Episodes where the Rocket-Dan play the role of the good guys (even if only temporarily) are always a treat. #DogasuWatchesJohto

The December 2019 issue of Animedia (which came out shortly before the start of #anipoke 2019) included a description of Gou as being a 中性的な美少年, a phrase that means "androgynous pretty boy" but that a lot of fans misinterpreted as meaning "non-binary" instead.

Episode 172 "Redian! Get Through the Valley of Wind!!" A pretty decent showcase of a Pokémon I honestly never really thought much of before now. Which is kind of the whole point of this show, really! The Rocket trio is hilarious as always. #DogasuWatchesJohto

The origins of the Rocket trio's cross-dressing, according to one of the show's veteran animators Sayuri Ichi'ishi: (yes, it does seem like she forgot about the beach episode)

Episode 170 "Tsubotsubo vs. Madatsubomi" Our heroes chase after a bunch of turtles to drink their sweet, sweet nectar. The absolute chaos going on in this one reminds me a lot of the classic Kanto-era episodes in the best way possible. #DogasuWatchesJohto

Episode 169 "Goodbye Rokon! The Pokémon Beauty Contest!!" This episode has a lot of bad about it -- poorly executed lore dumps, a lack of focus on Takeshi, a contest with no conclusion -- but the Rocket trio's antics and bizarre Pokémon designs bump this up to "just alright." #DogasuWatchesJohto

Episode 168 "Azumao! Fishing Battle!!" Kasumi gets another great focus episode, and this time Nyorozo gets some of that spotlight too. The art's a bit rough this week but the various character interactions -- especially between Kasumi and Tokio -- more than make up for it. #DogasuWatchesJohto
