Annotating the Judge’s Decision in the Case of Liam Conejo Ramos, a 5-Year-Old Detained by ICE
Our critic annotates the barbed wordplay of a decision challenging the Trump administration’s theory of executive power.

I am so tired of waking up, reading the news, and writing an email like this to an American colleague: "Dear [insert career civil servant's name], we read the news of [name of closing lab] with a heavy heart this morning. Please don't hesitate to reach out if we can help." The #NCAR news bites.
Trump moves to dismantle major US climate research center in Colorado
The Trump administration is breaking up the National Center for Atmospheric Research, taking aim at one of the world's leading climate research labs.

Here we go again! 🎤 Our event "Diverse minds, shared future", in collaboration with the LGBTQ+ STEM group during the Berlin Science Week, is approaching fast! We're excited to start introducing the amazing speakers joining us for this year's event
The #JuneauIcefield is a deeply meaningful place for me and many others, part of the reason we put so much care into our case study on tipping of Áakʼw Tʼáak Sítʼ (Mendenhall Glacier), one of the icefield's major outlet glaciers. The study is out today as part of the Global Tipping Points Report.
Bleaching, Melting, Slowing: New Global Tipping Points report tracks growing risks of Earth system tipping points. It highlights mounting risks, from melting glaciers, ice fields to slowing ocean currents, ice sheets & rainforests under pressure. www.pik-potsdam.de/en/news/late...
Ready for @berlinscienceweek.bsky.social?! Come by the Diverse Minds, Shared Future event on 1 Nov from @berlin-soapbox.bsky.social and LGBTQIA+ STEM Berlin. You’ll hear six great talks, including one about glacier tipping points 😉. No PowerPoints, just props! berlinscienceweek.com/programme/di...

It's hard to believe that nearly a decade has passed since @geojane.bsky.social went to B.U.'s administration and detailed her shocking experiences as a grad student under my then-adviser, Dave Marchant. In the years since, we have learned of so, so, so many others who likewise abused their (1/7)
My main advice is this: students, treat your PhD as you would a job https://go.nature.com/457wUqv
Super stoked to be one of the speakers at this year's #PrideHike in the beautiful Kaisergebirge! I'll be chatting all weekend about the changing alpine environment and how that impacts us ~all~, especially those of us whose happy place is up in the thin air. #GlobalWarming is pushing the world closer to tipping points, risking irreversible changes. A Joint Research Centre policy brief, with PIKs @donovanpdennis.com & Sina Loriani, explains the need for anticipatory governance to tackle systemic risks. joint-research-centre.ec.europa.eu/jrc-news-and...

Getting a bit teary on the train listening to two elderly gays signing up for new life insurance policies and making each other the beneficiaries. Something really beautiful in the mundanity of that. Speaking a mix of English, Swedish, German, and French. Stunning.
Did a thing last week🎓. Really thought I wouldve left it before that day came tbh. Can remember the moment I was accepted to a PhD, 21, totally gobsmacked. The day I left Boston and that first PhD, my supervisor in the Times for harassing his students in Antarctica. The first time w/ my 🌈 pin(1/2)
Hello world — with little luck, I’m looking for a paper that summarises the history of study of climate change, particularly with respect to glaciers. I.e., what did researchers in the early 20th century think caused the kind of variability that led to terminus position changes? Suggestions?
Had a great time at this year’s TIPMIP meeting with @docaharper.bsky.social and so many others! We had a night at the Maryland Science Center and a keynote by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse as well as many many productive science conversations 😊.
I'm attending the Tipping Points Model Intercomparison Project meeting. I'm excited to be a co-lead for the Biosphere domain, where we'll be using land surface and Earth system models to study tipping points, especially in tropical and boreal forests. Lots more to come!
Just spent the last two weeks crisscrossing the U.S. West with my TIPMIP colleague to talk climate and Earth system tipping points. We’ve learned so much about the state of tipping research in the U.S.! Looking forward to our next stops on the East coast before our TIPMIP General Assembly and AGU!
Happening today at Lettretage in Berlin! Join for a discussion of "The Shining Mountains" by Alix Christie, and a short warm-up reading by yours truly :). Veteranenstr. 21, doors open at 19:00, readings begin 19:30.
pro tip: if you power walk to work listening to an aerobics playlist wearing a beige turtleneck, white high tops, and calvins, you kinda feel like your mom in the eighties which is fun.
Berlin is cool cuz you can go from this and this to that and that without an outfit change.
Could also just eat the rich instead.
🆕Taxing land instead of capital could reduce the widening gap between rich & poor in societies, finds new PIK study with PIK Director Ottmar #Edenhofer & @maxfranks.bsky.social . The benefits: less speculation in real estate, more funding for public transport. www.pik-potsdam.de/en/news/late...

Welcome to Bluesky @flisaacs.bsky.social! Was going through some old photos and came across this evergreen photo.... Hope to see you sometime soon here in Potsdam :)... also spotted @juliusgarbe.bsky.social (who I'm sure would be just as excited to see you too). What a morning :) :) :)
Our community here is growing which is really nice. GFZ scientists we found so far (actually, they found us here...) are @bstein.bsky.social (modelling the deep underground in Earth's mantle etc.), @lianegbenning.bsky.social (researching ice algae, e.g. on Greenland, and other super cool stuff 1/n

Hey #bluesky world, PIK is new on here :) Looking forward to share latest PIK #science! Follow us for research news on #climate impacts, #climatechange, #solutions and much more. In case you're wondering what PIK does, watch this great explainer vid: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzRx...
Was such a delight to see @katharinehayhoe.com at PIK today 😊. Such a nice discussion on public perceptions of climate change/policies, the role of scientists in enacting climate policy change, and the space science and scientists occupy in political arenas. Thanks for the great talk (as always)!
