4 weeks left (four!) until Italy lifts passport checks for Spanish flights, and Meloni is dangerously close to getting a cake served right to her face. Somebody call Ceuta and request a crisis, please.... the clock is ticking... 🎂👀

The Italian radical right are truly the masters of the "Politics of the Announcement", the "Kings and Queens of Permanent Campaigning"...
The Italian government floating 500 extra border guards after the events in Ceuta is top-tier press-release politics. Can’t wait for (an unlikely) journalist to check back in two months to see if a single one was hired. Spoiler: they won’t be. www.repubblica.it/politica/202...

I am old enough to remember the spring of 2015, when a younger Meloni, at the head of a tiny opposition party, said: "The only solution is an international military intervention [...] & a naval blockade to prevent departures [from Africa]". It is the first mention l know of of a "naval blockade".

A familiar story playing out in Italy and the UK: collaborating with the extreme right rarely goes both ways. Rupert Lowe calls on Nigel Farage to join forces with Restore Britain—on his terms. Not at all dissimilar to what Vannacci is proposing to Meloni... www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
Rupert Lowe urges Nigel Farage to work with Restore Britain
Lowe says the two should put ‘personalities and our past disagreements aside for good of the country’

Ukraine remains a h7ge sticking point between PD and M5S in Italy. M5S's leader today (after assuring Ukraine that he wants to "protect" their interests): "We will not vote for military support [to Ukraine]."
It. govt has reacted to recent events in Ceuta by: 1. Adopting border controls with Spain (i.e. at major airports - a purely symbolic measure meant to weaken PM Sanchez); 2. Pushing for new agreements with Afr. countries for asylum/ migration applications to be processed there - with EU blessing.

Broken record alert 📢: Picking fights with Madrid feels good in Rome, but it’s 100% domestic panic control. When Vannacci's Futuro Nazionale is eating into your coalition’s polling numbers every single day, you gotta find something else to yell about! 🤷♂️

And 5. There will be a lot of unhinged horseshit on the other site about Ceuta which will have very little relation to what is happening on the ground after Frontex and Guardia Civil seal the gates.
For Vannacci on Instagram, recent events in Ceuta show what will happen in Italy very soon unless remigration policies are adopted. Not sure what this means, since remigration, by definition, is something a govt imposes on people who already have roots in a country, not new arrivals.

Glad to see the UK update its Equality Act. It’s time we ended microaggressions against multi-millionaires, like rolling your eyes when they complain about stamp duty on their seventh home.
Evening.
Beppe Grillo's blog, which launched M5S one and a half decades ago, today hosts Grillo's harsh criticism of the party: "5 Stelle has lost its identity, and above all, it has lost its <<uniqueness>>".

Hang in there, folks. Two months of honeymoon polling, then it's back to the only headline the press has ever truly loved: "Where did it all go wrong for Labour/the Tories/ Cleggmania/ You Name It?"

Vannacci & his Futuro Nazionale (FN - not by coincidence...) only need 6-7% to try & convince Meloni to welcome them into the right-wing alliance. However, if they overtake Tajani's Forza Italia (& they don't need to go much further to achieve that) the psychological impact will be huge.
This week l spoke to Handelsblatt about the challenge posed by Vannacci to the right-wing coalition in Italy (article in German) www.handelsblatt.com/100240389.html

Volatility... fragmentation... an electoral system which is certain to turn the next election into a lottery... these are the factors that matter more -much more- than asking who's up or down by a couple of points today.
