Been spending time wandering Paris in my mind/on my screen/in my notebook and I would like to be there, but in my novel it is April and 15 degrees.

Everyone can't and shouldn't work in tech or finance. Everyone can't and won't be a multi-millionaire. A society needs civil servants, social workers and creatives. We need NHS doctors and dentists. We need teachers, people who work in publishing and the law. Where is the encouragement for this?

When you go back to the late bucket on Turnitin with a tiny feeling of dread but then it is full of wonderful suprises and little gems from the sweet students who have been thinking thinking thinking about all the obscure brilliant literary women you mentioned months ago.

My fav thing to do when marking truly good essays is the quote the student's own excellent phrases back to them and engage in the feedback column. I want them to know their writing and voice has value, and an ability to spark discussion and carry forward in new ways.

Marking a batch of 3rd year final essays. The students got it so deeply. They found out things I didn't know through research, they are gems. I can tell they actually wrote these (or the ones I've read so far). Tearing up thinking about the humanities, not giving up, rejecting AI, keeping going.

Niche post requesting archival help: Where are the papers of Helen Maria Williams and John Hurford Stone, specifically relating to their English Press? I thought some were held in Paris as part of the city archives, but am having trouble finding any trace. No luck for Imprimerie Anglais etc.

Why do we need AI slop generating fake quotes and conjured up images of one of the greatest philosophers of her time? Use the stunning paintings of her, draw from her moving words as memes, sure, but why do this?

Last day of teaching in Canterbury, again. I have loved co-convening Rise of the Professional Writer. The hardest thing about sessional lecturing is hoping you get to come back.

Highly recommend letting your two tiny children run wild in a woodland full of bluebells as a good way to get through the afternoon slump.

I read Peter Pan to my children tonight and the 20 months old ran around the room shouting FLYYYYY and trying to jump off of things while the 4 year old sprinkled fairy dust on him. Parenting is hard work but it is also magical.

Is it a coincidence that many people I'm friends with are writing novels (myself included)? People who I think of more as poets, journalists, researchers, or non-writers. Nope. It is not a coincidence. It is a good time to create a world, or write about what you'd like to see in this one.

Spent the day lecturing on women writers of history from 18th-19th c. The students were pretty pissed that women are still dealing with the same nonsense today as two centuries ago. They were fired up, ready to read some books/make some noise. I love teaching. Best antidote for a troubling world.
