Dementia researcher. Senior Lecturer, Gerontologist and full time 40k fanatic. Posts probably about Warhammer, but with the odd bit of dementia thrown in. Death to the False Emperor!

So we knew the US had decided it no longer wants to be a maritime and mercantile empire based on military alliances and global free trade. Now we know its decided it wants to be a 19th century style continental, colonial power. It won’t end well for anyone.

BBC Scotland features an article on our work with people with dementia to develop teaching for nursing students, led by people living with dementia. I lecture nursing students about my dementia - I want to show it can happen to anyone www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I lecture Stirling University nursing students about my dementia

When Joan Lyon was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2023 she set out to share her experience while she still could.

We found similar findings from Scittish projects making direct payments to care experienced young people and people living with dementia in Scotland. Funnily enough both groups can and ro make excellent decisions about their needs and how the money can help them meet them.

Spoiler: They used the money just as wisely as anyone else would, and it's so frustrating that this still isn't a common sense assumption to make.

This shit has been going on for 7 years now. No one in any UK govt, tory or lab can actually make a grown up, serious decision about what we do now post brexit. So we continue in this purgatory of stagnation and decay, a country with no clue about what it wants to be, or what to do to get there.

Apparently engaging with the EU is all about economics, while also avoiding freedom of movement. Sigh. Anyone hoping to rejoin has a very very long wait. Frankly, if you're a rejoiner over 50, I'd suggest taking up stamp collecting or bird watching instead. It'll be more fulfilling.

Lolling at the ludicrousness of the orange manbaby suing the BBC for $10bn. This is literally Trump suing the UK taxpayer, expecting us to cough up $10bn into his back pocket. There is no way in this world that any UK Government could allow that to happen. They’d pass legislation to stop it.

Anyone else drowning in peer review journal article requests at the moment. I’ve honestly lost count of the number I’ve received in the last week. I’m happy to do as many as I can but at this rate it’d become a full time job to do them all.

Watching an old Royle Family christmas special on UKTV Gold and bloody hell look at the size of that box of Celebrations. It’s three times the size as what we get now! (Best Jim Royle impression) “Bloody hell, the tight gets!!!”

What’s saddest is the missed opportunity. As the USA decides to turn its back on the enlightenment the UK could become the world’s university. Instead we’re going to shoot ourselves in the leg, again all because forriners = bad. Worst is the public generally support people coming here to learn.

Our uni leaders need to grow a backbone and tell the govt they aren’t just going to play anymore while the govt lets us all burn. I’d love to see the entire sector just downs tools. No teaching, no research, no admin and no participation in any administrative requirements forced on us by govt.

I’d love to see UUK, UCU, UCEA, the Russell group, the funding councils, research charities, hell pretty much every university stakeholder to stand together and say to the Govt in one voice - Stop fucking around with our universities. You are destroying us, and you will miss us when we’re gone.

I can feel another letter bollocking the lunacy of the Govt’s latest HE policy announcement is about to be sent to my local MP. And I sincerely hope our VC has rung him this morning to do the same.
