Internal Medicine doc, primary care, MD/PhD nerd (microbiology/immunology). I’ve made mistakes; everyone has. But the right approach always includes kindness.

I still have Project 2025 open in a browser window and I still can’t bring myself to read it (but I probably should for, ya know, our road map to Hell).

So another provider in clinic had two littles she needed to look in their ears and she hates the remote camera thingies so she used the otoscope in my room (but I got out MY remote thingie so the kids could see inside their own ears, cuz how cool is that???)

Viewing the current news cycle through the lens of a doc that’s taken care of a lot of vets, a lot of PTSD over the last couple of decades, I don’t care for it. Especially when the current explanations for why we chose to do this are inconsistent at best, incoherent at worst.

Switching antidepressants in the middle of whatever tf this is *gestures vaguely* and the shit going on in my personal and professional life… makes it rather difficult to tell if things are better, worse, or just the normal day to day.

Just saw a young lady that's having episodes of tachycardia that I suspect is SVT and remembering a story from someone in med school whose grandmother would get them when going for walks in winter (Minnesota) who would dunk her head in the snow to stop them. Minnesota grandmas are a tough breed 😂

Could someone explain the geometry of shooting someone point blank in the face through the driver’s side window while simultaneously being in danger of being run over by said car?

On 9/11, I was post-call, having worked a 40 hr shift the day before, so I was brain-fried. I watched the news all day, realizing that on that day, our world had changed. Is this another one of those days?

I walked into a patient room last week and said “I’m taking care of all the flowers today, I just saw a Violet, and now I’m seeing a Rose”, and she said “you should have been here earlier, the nurse’s name is Lily” and that was enough cuteness for a week, at least.

I grew up a skinny smart kid. I dealt with plenty of bullies. Giving in literally never works. They always want more. Fighting back, standing up to them, might get you some bruises and such, but it’s the only way.

So, thinking about getting another dog, and the internet has the nerve to tell me that Jack Russell Terriers make bad therapy dogs. Hmpf. They obviously never met Logan.

A small white dog is paying close attention to you. Here he is at the West Texas VA in Big Spring, Texas with his physician owner.

Today I’m remembering Margaret, the crazy old lady that lived next door where I grew up, sitting on her retaining wall with a jug of Gallo wine and some firecrackers, happily getting sauced and occasionally tossing a lit firecracker, and shouting “happy Fourth of July!” 🇺🇸 🧨 🍷

We may be living through a shit show, but damn if I haven’t had a very long stretch where every patient is just so decent, and it feels like a privilege to be able to help them.
