Been in plenty in Africa, never thought I’d be moving animals from fire here in Wales. We are safe, but compelled to highlight how compassionate and friendly the @SWFireandRescue are, despite working through the night and now in full PPE in a heatwave #professionalism #superheroes #wildfire #Drought

Some fantastic photos from a huge weekend. Here I am delivering the Big Reunion Weekend guest lecture to our #Cardiffuni #Alumni in front of Vice Chancellor Wendy Larner, and other distinguished guests from around the world.
End of a huge week celebrating our Cardiff uni graduates and our first Alumni Big Weekend. I put in over 25k steps on Graduation day alone! The highlight for me was our Vice Chancellor attending my talk and giving the most glowing introduction before I spoke. events.cardiff.ac.uk/view/guest-l...
Guest lecture: Dr Rhys Jones – A Wild Life

End of a very hot, but truly lovely day. Congratulations class of 26! #Graduation @cubiosciences @cardiffuni
Oh, I have a visitor in the kitchen. Can any of my moth expert friends confirm this is a Red Underwing (Catocala nupta)? South Wales area. #moths
Enjoying some R&R in Rhodes with Helen and managed to get a dive in at Agathi Bay, Charaki, just north of Lindos. Many thanks to my friends Giorgios and dive partner Paris at #EasyDiversRhodes for looking after us all afternoon. We both had an amazing time. 5 star service from a 5 star dive centre.
It’s hard to convey just how humble #SamNeill was. I’m lucky enough to have had a conversation about dinosaurs with ‘Dr Alan Grant’, and I can assure you, in real life, Sam absolutely knew the difference between a Velociraptor and a Deinonychus claw! RIP Sam. Thank you for being you.
Daisy would like to remind you all to stay cool and hydrated during the #heatwave, thank you x #hotdogs #heatkills
If you haven’t already walked your dog today then please don’t consider doing so now, leave it until tomorrow morning. #hotdogs #heatkills
Enjoying the Solstice sunshine in the Cotswolds with Helen and Daisy
I cannot believe we have lost #AnthonyHead I interviewed Anthony many times over the years, face to face and here on Zoom during the pandemic. I am genuinely deeply saddened at his passing. He was always extremely kind and generous to me during interviews. Two Scoobys lost this year. RIPGiles x
Peonies blooming in the garden and smelling as beautiful as they look.
I’m sure you guys have remembered, but don’t forget to take your dogs out for an early walk today to avoid burning paws on tarmac and pavement, not to mention just generally overheating. It was already 13 degrees Celsius on Daisy’s 7 o’clock walk this morning. #Hotdogs #Earlywalk
We all know that Daisy the Therapy Dog is a superstar, but these were the absolute scenes of students queuing to meet her this afternoon at Cardiff Uni’s Bute library. She is loved by everyone she meets and she loves them back equally. 🐾 🐾 ❤️
A beautiful male slow worm (Anguis fragilis) recorded on this morning’s reptile survey where my students are accessing the health of green and brown corridors located at a number of Cardiff University resident sites. @one-cardiffuni.bsky.social
A fabulous afternoon spent speaking for the Cardiff University Learning and Teaching Academy at our World Cafe workshop titled ‘Dice and Mentimeter’ - introducing gamification to teaching delivery. Thank you to everyone who attended! @one-cardiffuni.bsky.social
Last weekend I attended one of my very favourite book festivals, ‘Reading the Wild’ at Llandovery. I was overwhelmed by the turn out to hear me speak about ‘Becoming Dr Jones, and especially for not only selling out of books at the festival, but the local Books at the Dragon’s Garden book shop too!
The Blue Tit chicks have hatched in our garden bird box and are keeping their parents very busy! 🐛
