Loving the fact that I live in a neighborhood where I genuinely had no idea where my 5 year old son was for a stretch of this afternoon and could be completely non-stressed about it. He turned up at the house just up the street, with his sister and another neighborhood kid his age. As it should be.
One of the reasons the Chesapeake is a mess is…all the Amish farms using organic fertilizer that runs off into the Susquehanna and then into the bay. Organics won’t save us.
The Haber Process works anywhere in the world, and is much cheaper than using organic fertilizer, even taking into account the cost of a hypothetical where we have to make it here. Also, whether fertillizer is organic or not does not change whether it produces nitrate runoff--b/c IT IS NITRATES.
Coming back to this point too. The Bund was not Zionist. There was no point where they were going to replace Di Shvue with Hatikvah. They did not believe that reestablishing a Jewish homeland in the land Jews call Zion would resolve the problems faced by Jews in Russia or Poland.
(effectively a junta) was not going to allow a party of revolutionary socialists—Jewish revolutionaries no less—to enact their agenda. The second myth is that the Bund was anti-Zionist. It isn’t exactly wrong to refer to the Bund as anti-Zionist. They used the term to describe themselves. (5)
I’ve been thinking a lot on this point. The fact remains that in diaspora Jews—like any minority—are dependent on the majority. The Bund COULD NOT fix Poland. They could help, but ultimately, the choice lay with the majority population.

Thinking a lot about the surge of interest in the Bund with the publishing of Crabapple’s book. This is great! The Bund was a huge part of Jewish life in Russia and Poland and remains a vibrant source in some corners today! (1)
Yup. We read the Odyssey in 9th grade with Mrs Wernig. It was a blast, even with half of it going right over my head!
Want to genuinely test something: Followers, were you taught about Homer in K-12 education?
Love this! And yes, to punch up Rachel’s closing point—understanding how rituals become meaningful makes them all the more meaningful, not less!
I wrote about the shockingly recent history of potato latkes and teaching about the development of holiday traditions for @jewishsf.bsky.social, included in a recipe booklet sent out to donors PDF: www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/fu583...
100% through the movies. Saw them first, then read the trilogy. Then read the hobbit. Then read it again. Eventually started a tradition of rereading the trilogy every year. Then bought a nicer set of the trilogy and the Hobbit. Bought a matching edition of the Silmarilion.
I think I have reached enough followers to start asking questions (a lot of my research is about the reception of #Tolkien’s works, so I love asking about it)! When did you first read anything by Tolkien (or watch/play/listen to an adaptation if that came first)? Reskeet for more answers!
Stanford FTW! Can’t wait for the ACC championship to feature Cal-Stanford
The fact that there was a real man named Amos behind the cookies makes this so much sweeter. Rest in peace you legend
Wally “Famous” Amos, an entrepreneur who founded the cookie brand Famous Amos, has died. He was 88
Still amazed the the US managed to pull this off. I cannot begin to comprehend what the released prisoners and their families must be feeling right now
Evan Gershkovich, Alsu Kurmasheva and Paul Whelan, who had all been imprisoned in Russia on charges criticized by the Biden administration, were greeted by President Biden and Vice President Harris as they arrived at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.
Just a reminder that #JDVance is a hedge fund guy from Chicago. The closest he ever came to being a redneck was when he got a sun burn at the yacht club
