Dr Kat Williams

Third sector research by day, the German far-right by night. I like books, plants, knitting, and pretending that I'm going to start running again soon. My book on women and the AfD is due this summer. 🖥️: https://linktr.ee/drkatwilliams

As my 40th birthday approaches, I have bought a dress with squids and sea critters on it and booked a tattoo. What tat design, you ask? Well, it's Halley's comet as it is interpreted on the Bayeux Tapestry 😂☄️ my only plan as I enter my 4th decade is to keep being this cool 😎

"I am the most physically and verbally attacked public figure or politician of modern times" is a quite a thing for Nigel Farage to say when two MPs have been murdered in the last decade, Stephen Timms was stabbed twice in the stomach in 2010 and there was a plot to murder Labour MP Rosie Cooper

🎸 A thunderous thank you to Metallica's @allwithinmyhands.org Foundation! Following their incredible Cardiff show, we've been truly honoured with a £20,000 donation that will help us support young people, women and children experiencing or at risk of homelessness across Wales 💙

Group photo of the band Metallica. Each member is smiling. There is a plain white background.

Some recent knitting-related activities. Two swatches (griffin from the Antique Pattern Library, and goat from unknown on Pinterest); the curio collar (pattern designed by Lydia Morrow); and finally a frame for my Black Philip piece (pattern designed by The Witchy Stitcher).

Two knitted swatches in dark grey and cream. One with what could be a griffin, and the other with a goat reared on its hind legs. A banana yellow knitted collar. A framed pink and black knitted work bearing the slogan "wouldst thou like to live deliciously?" from the 2015 film The Witch, dir. Robert Eggers.

I had a terrible dream last night that I received my book proofs but it was not the material I submitted 😭 (yes, I have reduced my heroic levels of caffeine intake, why do you ask?)

Knitting with real wool is very nice. My current WIPs: The yellow and green vest is a riff on the olive vest by meganfaithmakes, and the grey and cream jumper is the Olga sweater by petiteknits 🧶🐑

The completed front panel of a yellow and green striped vest. The back panel of a yellow and green striped knitted vest. A grey and cream striped jumper with only one sleeve. A grey and cream striped jumper with only one sleeve, this time hung on a coat hanger.

Feeling a bit smug about all this aran weight (real!) wool that I picked up at Wonderwool Wales for £20 yesterday 🧶 (the bright yellow wool in last pic is sock yarn so not part of the aran haul) 🧶

Four different colours of yarn - yellow, light green, dark green, and purple - on top of a chequered bedspread A kitchen table scene - winding the hanks of yarn into yarn cakes to make it easier to knit later down the line. Three lots of yarn cakes in yellow, dark green, and light green.

The latest blog is up! Following on from Prof. Paul Jackson's look at dogwhistles, Dr Dan Jones talks about how the extreme right have engaged with environmentalism - using mainstream language to cloak concept-dense narratives. www.northampton.ac.uk/research-blo...

🚨New article🚨 What if the misguided construction of 'right-wing populism' has prevented us from holding the elite accountable and rejuvenate democracy? This is what @alexyates2000.bsky.social and I explore in our new article: 'There is no such thing as ‘right-wing populism’' 1/ shorturl.at/jptiu

The proofs are in! Youth Wings of the Populist Radical Right will be published in mid-June by OUP. Covering 10 PRR youth wings across Europe, we show how these organisations act as motors of mobilisation, socialisation, internationalisation, professionalisation, & normalisation for their parties.
