Flash drought conditions developed this week in parts of the upper Midwest, including Minnesota. Numerous areas in the region, including Minnesota’s Twin Cities, have also recorded among their warmest temperatures on record over the past month. #Drought #Drought2026 #US #Minnesota

USDM Hot Topic July 30, 2026: Minnesota. Abnormal dryness through severe drought worsened in Minnesota this week: for abnormal dryness or drought, from 86.6% to 95.26%; for moderate drought or worse, from 47.76% to 76%; and for severe drought, from 16.97% to 34.96%. The Drought Severity and Coverage Index increased from 151 to 206 of 500 for Minnesota.

Pasture and hayland forage production has been markedly reduced all season long. Producers have shared some water quality and stock water levels reflect similarly to 2021. Hay and pasture forage is markedly reduced across the county. Estimate so far is 50% reduced production of hay. Top soil moisture has reduced in the past few weeks. With high heat, wind, conditions have progressed to mildly to moderately dry in McHenry County. With the week ahead with no moisture and high heat - continue drying may be expected. Ranchers are concerned about pastures and have hauled water and supplemented.”

USDM Hot Topic July 23, 2026: Texas. Abnormal dryness through severe drought improved in Texas after record-breaking precipitation in parts of the state this week: for abnormal dryness or drought, from 41.11% to 37%; for moderate drought or worse, from 25.79% to 22.09%; for severe drought or worse, from 8.89% to 8.68%. Extreme drought remained at 1.04%.

The Quick Drought Response Index (QuickDRI) is meant to complement the Vegetation Drought Response Index (VegDRI at vegdri.unl.edu). QuickDRI was designed to detect the effects of drought at time intervals of a month or less. #drought #QuickDRI #VegDRI #FlashDrought 🧪 quickdri.unl.edu/Home.aspx

The Quick Drought Response Index (QuickDRI) is a
shorter-term indicator of dryness. It is calculated through
the analysis of satellite- and model-based observations of
conditions that influence drought.
QuickDRI is designed to provide a snapshot of
anomalously dry or wet conditions over the past 4 weeks
and serves as an indicator of emerging or rapidly changing
drought conditions.
The maps are updated weekly over the continental United
States and have a 1-kilometer spatial resolution.

Description from CMOR user: “Hay harvested is about half of normal production. It has been around 90 to near 100 degrees for 30+ days now. Out of irrigation water and only about 3 inches of precipitation since September 2025. Cattle producers and other livestock producers are culling animals. There is minimal hay left to purchase in the area. Hauling hay in from SW Kansas and NW New Mexico. Several ranchers are hauling water and some of the wells are going down in production. I have lived here almost 40 years and have not seen these conditions in that time period.”

The lack of snow and moisture over the winter has drastically affected the area. Drought conditions are high causing immense stress to animals and livestock owners. Irrigation water only lasted 1 month instead of a full season from May to September. Significant amounts of hay are having to be purchased to fill need of hay that couldn’t be produced. Water is having to be hauled to cattle because reservoirs did not get filled.”

Extreme #drought expanded in northern #NewMexico this week amid very dry soil moisture levels. New Mexico is one of the states that has enacted fireworks regulations or guidance ahead of the Fourth of July weekend. Others include Utah, Oregon, Washington, Texas, Colorado, Idaho and Nebraska.

USDM Hot Topic July 2, 2026: New Mexico. Abnormal dryness or worse remained at 96.83% and moderate drought or worse at 94.42% this week for New Mexico. Severe drought or worse rose slightly from 84.5% to 84.51%. Most notable was Extreme drought expansion from 21.59% to 36.13%. This brought the Drought Severity and Coverage Index from 297 to 312 of 500.

After a very early snowmelt, #drought conditions have been ramping up in #Oregon. Gov. Kotek has declared a drought emergency for 19 of the 36 counties in the state. Last week, state regulators curtailed junior water rights between Bend and Redmond due to water shortages from the Deschutes River.

USDM Hot Topic June 25, 2026, Oregon. This week, abnormal dryness through extreme drought increased in Oregon: from 95.79% to 97.29% for abnormal dryness; from 86.19% to 86.63% for moderate drought; from 44.16% to 54.79% for severe drought; and from 9.24% to 16.4% for extreme drought. The Drought Severity and Coverage Index rose from 235 to 255 of 500.
