@lastpositivist.bsky.social · 2d agoI genuinely do talk about this a fair bit. My extremely boring opinion is that Paradise Lost is the single greatest work of literature out there and I will never stop loving it.
I'm glad (some) graduate students have larger stipends these days, but $50k is more than the starting pay for most public school teachers in the US. More than the starting pay for some professorships. Good for Columbia?

Here is my best Habermas story. I am grad student waiting in LONG line for Habermas talk. There is a tall man waiting in front of me. Line moves so we are eventually visible to organizers, a woman looks over & makes horrified face. Runs out: "Prof Habermas! You don't have to wait in line!"

Ran into a colleague who retired 3 years ago (in his early 60s). He looked great and waxed lyrical about how happy he is. He looked me in the eye and said, "There is life after [insert institution here." I really needed to hear that today.
