Exploring how humans learn, reason, and develop better judgment in the age of AI. Educator. Researcher. Developing the Human Capability Framework™. Thinking Out Loud.

Thinking Out Loud: Looking Back at the First 25 (1/6) When I started writing these posts, I thought I was thinking about AI. Looking back, I realize I was really thinking about what it means to remain deeply human in an age where intelligence is becoming abundant.

The ethical question is not simply whether someone used AI. The better question may be: Did AI expand the person’s capacity to think, reason, and exercise judgment, or did it replace those capabilities? That distinction is becoming central to my work.

A student uses AI to challenge their assumptions, consider another perspective, and improve their reasoning. Another student uses AI to produce a finished response without engaging with the ideas. Both students “used AI,” but did they make the same ethical choice? I do not think they did.

Ethical AI decisions in education should begin with four questions: Is it Human-centered? Does it preserve Intellectual integrity? Is its use Honest and transparent? Does it improve the educational Outcome? That is the thinking behind the HI-HO Framework.

Thinking Out Loud 21: An AI use can comply with a school’s policy and still raise important ethical questions. Acceptable use and ethical use are not always the same thing. What distinction do you think educators need to make between the two?
