An interesting pre-print came out last week on how Monarch butterflies process irrelevant visual information. Monarch butterflies have big wings that sweep across a big part of their visual fields on every wingbeat, creating a bit of a problem.

Visual illusions are often an entry point to learning about visual perception & neuroscience. Some of them can have an impact on research, like with the dress that broke the internet. You can now vote for the best visual illusion of the year until this Saturday (link below). 🧵
Really pleased to see Claudia von Bastian's talk on cognitive plasticity in video-game players. It referenced a study that just came out comparing expert counter strike players to novices, skilled, and "emerging" players in a task-switching task.
Unusually I have read two really interesting papers on motion processing in the butterfly. One is about the wing patterns in butterflies might have evolved to maximize misdirection (perhaps something we can hint at with their erratic flights). (1/4)
The Cognition Group in the Psychology dept at Exeter are at risk of redundancy because "basic cognitive psychology research does not align with the current priorities of funding bodies" If you think this is overtly wrong and misguided, please sign this open letter docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

Should have been labelled as AI (neuroscientists to weight whether it is slop) It misleadingly depicts a neural developnent process, not learning. To boot, content was lifted verbatim from somebody else.

I thought I'd share this fascinating piece of tactile neurophysiology as I am updating my introduction to sensation and perception lectures. (1/4)
Two free reviews a week. Papers stored in encrypted servers, not used for model training without permission. Curious to see how it fares with cog neuro papers. If could be a net benefit to the field, eve if was just able to catch statistical errors.

As we can expect PubMed dysfunction more and more or to be swamped with fake journals I suggest you get acquainted to this nice alternative: europepmc.org

From a journalist friend: Just spreading the word. The CDC is purging data, so people should archive their favorite CDC datasets today, namely ones around race/ethnic diversity, LGBTQ, and reproductive health. Also health data involving climate. The youth risk behavior survey has already gone down.
Saddened to hear about the passing of Eileen Kowler. She just handled a paper I co-authored on anticipatory pursuit for Journal of Vision. I haven't seen a better editor job. She made so many groundbreaking contributions to the field, including on the nature of anticipatory pursuit.
Very sad to hear about the passing of Eileen Kowler, a true giant in the field of eye movements & their interaction with vision & cognitive processes. She helped me as a grad student & it was always wonderful to talk to her. Her body of work is foundational to our field. Thank you, Eileen.
