I've been unwell. Feeling better today so I've emerged from my bedroom. "I think I prefer it when you're ill," he grumbled, as I started to tidy the kitchen and got in his way.

Two Big Firemen and 25 Years of Bullshit: Donald Trump Has Never Stopped Lying About 9/11
Friday he’ll be the only living president not at Ground Zero, and today he stood at the White House and told a story about firefighters carrying him to safety. None of it holds up. It never has.

In just a few short weeks we've gone from, "It's so hot I can hardly breathe!" to "Must plug in the electric blanket; I'm freezing!"
Fox was back in the same position this evening, fixing me with his, "Supper? Now please?" look. How quickly he's learned!
Our late, lamented Mole (cat) was a prodigious hunter. Just before I woke this morning, I dreamt that he was trying to catch an adder. As they wrestled it bit him. He died in my arms. Not a particularly cheery start to the day!
Thank you to everyone who's responded to this. Some really useful information and some great help and her baptismal record has now been found and the fact that birth certs didn't exist then. Much, much appreciated.
Right, you clever lot. I need to find a birth certificate for my mother, born somewhere in India (possibly Bombay) in 1930. Have tried the govt website recommended by Google but no joy. Any tips, please?

The 8yo was very impressed yesterday by her new teacher. Apparently, teacher had seen the Berlin wall before it came down. OH said later, "I was at the wall. And a man pointed machine gun at me." That's going to blow her tiny mind when I make him tell her!
Belatedly, I must tell you that I read the preview copy of The Wolf That Chews Rocks by Russell Jones and just loved it. Well researched info on the development from wolf to dog, interwoven with his life with the resident 'wolf' in laugh-out-loud detail. I'll be buying several copies as C/mas gifts.
"Scuse me," he said, "but supper is usually out by now." Patiently sat there, gazing at me, for over 5 mins til I gave in and fetched his supper. Not enough that I'm harried by Miss H, the fox is now getting in on the act.
Let's hear it for our vets, who estimated £850 - £950 (gulp) but only charged £530. (I say 'only', but all things are relative.) That included surgery, bloods, xray, hind foot pedicure, general check-up, pain relief meds, sachet of food to aid recovery and follow-up appointment next week.
Miss Hettie has just 2 teeth left. Picking her up at 4.15.
Loud wails from the cat carrier on the front passenger seat in the car. "What's that you're wailing, Hettie? Oh. Judas, is it?" And so it went all the way to the V.E.T., our brief wait in the waiting room, then a final grumble as I left her. And believe me, I felt like Judas. My poor girl.
And, get this: eye consultant used 'fewer' rather than what would have been a contextually incorrect 'less'. "Anything else?" he asked at the end of the consultation. "At the risk of sounding patronising," said I, "thank you for using 'fewer'. It brought joy to my heart." He laughed.
Cataract surgery, Mk II. Consultant agrees: GA, both eyes done at the same time. "Please write on my notes that I'm really neurotic." "Don't worry," said he. "I have."
WhatsApp message from a beloved Irish friend's daughter, inviting us to her wedding next summer. I've known her since she was 6. Made evening dresses for her Barbie's. Watched her grow into a lovely young woman And now getting married. All grown up. Made my day.
Happy Autumn, troops. And we welcome it here at Sloven Gardens with comfortable coolth and a lovely snuggle with the slightly whiffy Miss Hettie. Whiff is due to be dealt with on Friday by the removal of her fangs. Poor lass.
Neighbour came out to tell me that they're not having the conifers trimmed after all - they're taking them out completely! Oh frabjous day, calloo callay!

The dog goes home this morning. Miss Hettie has her dancing shoes ready.
Right. It's 3.20. Dog, Hettie and I have spent the day slovening. Time to get dressed (me) and head back out into the front garden to continue with the attempt to create some order out there. This means putting on a bra (also me). Sigh.
Dog: Croissant? Smells good! Sloven: Yes, almond croissant. It is good. Dog: Can I have a little? S: No, almonds are bad for dogs. D: Are you sure? S: Yes. D: Quite sure? She's very determined.
Two Irish blokes take a weekend break in a Belgian city.
Make your favorite film sound as boring as possible without giving away the title. Apes learn about tools. Millions of years later, a computer goes wrong.
Dog: Not going out. 'S raining. Sloven: you're 1/4 spaniel, 3/4 poodle. You're practically waterproof. And it's 11 hours since you last did a wee. Dog: Not going out. Stubborn cuss.
"Let me out!" insisted Dog. "There might be a fox out there. I'm brave, I'll protect you!" I let her out. 5 mins later: "Let me in!" said Dog. Then: "Can't come in. Hettie is giving me the Death Glare." Had to go and open another door so she could come in through a room with no Hettie.
My pants are wet. Because they fell out of the laundry basket as we battled the wind and the (drum roll please, maestro) RAIN to get the washing off the line. Proper, wet rain. Yay!
I messaged Kat Trimble's sister, and mentioned that many of us keenly felt her loss. This is her reply:
Old newsreel on A House Through Time of Scots soldiers going off to war in kilts. A Scottish friend once told us tales her g/father had told her. Of how their kilt hems got wet in the trenches. How the hems froze. How the frozen hems rubbed their legs raw and bloody. Dreadful times.
Hettie: Not eating. Dog touched my dish. Dog: Not eating that, it's dog food. Also dog: Mmm, crusty bits where Hettie had spilt some food! Also dog: Mmm, Royal Canin dry cat food! Fox is going to eat well the next few nights.
Someone from a few houses up, who we've never met since we moved here, has just slowed his car to shout, "It looks lovely!" as I was working in the front garden. I feel all warm and fuzzy.
Scrolling through the Sarah Raven offers at 3am when the dog's woken you and you can't get back to sleep - not a good idea. Accidentally bought a load of plants and bulbs. Whoops.
