Approval of east London datacentre labelled ‘slap in the face’ for local democracy. Datacentre prioritised over building affordable homes. Little attention to environmental issues. Govt overturning local council refusal is not devolution or democracy. Big business always wins.

Stick to spending limits, PM and chancellor tell ministers in joint memo. Cue for real cuts; continuation of potholed roads, housing crisis, NHS queues, unfit schools, privatisations? Real change not possible whilst neoliberalism remains the opium of the political class.

Burnham's 'Manchesterism' is a story he has told himself and now the nation. But the reality is a legacy of profit for developers, while he delivered less than 5% affordable homes and private rents continue to soar. It doesn't have to be like this, but we cant afford more of the same.

This is how our government has been corrupted: 1) Donors give huge sums to elect politicians to office 2) Elected officials rewrite rules in the donors' favor 3) Donors make huge profit 4) Repeat We must get big money out of politics. It is the root of our dysfunction.
